How Big Is Your God?
I've been reading the book "Crazy Love" recently. The first chapter talked about who God is, and who we often seem him as being. For me this was a fascinating exploration of what I believe and what the Bible says.
The Bible talks a lot about who God is, especially in relation to who we are. Isaiah 40:25-31 paints a pretty awesome picture of God. It says:
25 “To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.
27 Why do you complain, Jacob?
Why do you say, Israel,
“My way is hidden from the LORD;
my cause is disregarded by my God”?
28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
29 He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
It's hard not to read that and be amazed. But Frances Chan, who wrote "Crazy Love," suggests that we really aren't in enough awe of God because we simply can't comprehend him. I guess that's right. As inspiring as Isaiah's words are, they are formed with descriptions created by men. But what he seeks to describe defies our ability to comprehend. God is bigger than our imagination.
Another issue touched on in the chapter is the idea that we're constantly trying to put God in a box, or make him the God we want Him to be. I have to admit that, at times, I think I'm guilty of that too. But when you really stop and reflect on who God is, it's hard not to be amazed.
So I guess the question Chan poses to readers, and the question I pose to you, is, How big is your God?
