Summer Movie Preview, Pt. 1

Since the summer movie season typically runs from the first weekend in May through August (four months of action films, crass comedies, and animated sequels), I decided to break the preview into two parts. Today I'll look at May and June, with July and August tomorrow.

Looking at the May schedule, this looks to be one of the biggest gamble years I've seen. There is little in the first four weeks that looks like a sure bet, and several that give me moments of pause.

May 6 — Thor
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Idris Elba
Preview: I think superhero fatigue is officially staring to set in, and this summer isn't going to help. There are plenty of superhero films on the docket this summer, starting with "Thor." This is a rather fringe comic book figure and, though it boasts a decent cast, I'm not sure it will work. The last time a director known for angsty drama tried his hand at a superhero film, Ang Lee gave us "The Hulk." That's right, epic disaster. "Thor" is directed by Kenneth Branagh. This could be better than I think... or it could be worse.

Sequel Parade:
May 20 — "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides;" May 27 — "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "The Hangover 2"
Preview: The summer of sequels gets off to a healthy start in May. I question the need for another "Pirates" film. The trailer looks like it could be decent, and a fresh start with a new cast surrounding Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow may work, but it feels a little too familiar. "Kung Fu Panda" was a cute cartoon, who knew we needed a sequel. The one that's makes me the most uncomfortable is "The Hangover 2." "The Hangover" was an incredible experience. The characters worked, that actors were great, and the gimmick of the story created a fun ride. Can lightening be caught in a bottle twice? I tend to think no, but we'll see.

Other May release: Something Borrowed (May 6); The Priest (May 13); Bridesmaids (May 13); and Tree of Life (Limited, May 27)

June looks like it might be a better month. Arguably, it could be the best month of summer, though with the final "Harry Potter" in July, that's pushing it.

June 3 — "X-Men First Class"
Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender; January Jones; and Rose Byrne
Preview: I know I just complained about sequels, but this is one I would take. Actually, it's a prequel with a whole new cast. Basically, it's a reboot for the "X-Men" franchise. After the disastrous third X-Men film and the marginal "Wolverine" tangent, this franchise could use a reboot. And, as a bonus, the trailers for this film look great.

June 10 — "Super 8"
Starring: Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning
Preview: Honestly, knowing Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights") is the star, J.J. Abrams ("Star Trek," "Fringe") is the director, and Steven Spielberg is the executive producer would be enough for me to get excited about this film. But, it gets better. The story looks unique and the early trailers make this look like it has a very cool retro feel. Think "Close Encounters" for a new generation.

June 24 — "Bad Teacher"
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, and Jason Segel
Preview: Every summer, there is one over-the-top adult comedy that is a great, wild ride. This summer I think "Bad Teacher" might be that film. The premise is just ridiculous enough that it might work, and the trailer is INCREDIBLE. Some have hopes for "The Hangover 2," but I think this might be the gem of the summer.

Other June Release: Green Lantern (June 17); Mr. Poppers Penguins (June 17); Cars 2 (June 24)
