Faith in Film 3, Week 10

Title: “Amazing Grace” (2006)

Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, and Romola Garai

Synopsis: This film chronicles the life and work of William Wilberforce, who was a member Parliament from the late 1700s through the early 1800s. He was a devout Christian and, during his time, became singularly committed to the cause of abolishing slavery and the slave trade within the British empire. The film chronicles that fight, all the principle players, and even the mentorship he receives from John Newton (Finney), a former slave trader turned evangelist who wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace.”

This film was one of the films released by Fox Faith films. It didn’t have a huge commercial following, but it is a beautiful film and a beautiful film story. It zeroes in on an interesting historical time period, and it’s also a testament to the resolve of someone who puts their faith in action. One of the big themes in the film is how William Wilberforce could remain faithful to the call he felt God put in his life. He had a love and devotion to Jesus Christ, but a talent for politics. At first, he thought that he had to choose between those loves, but as a friend pointed out, it was possible God was calling him to do both. Wilberforce, and his life’s work, are a dramatic and inspiring example of standing firm in faith. Though it wasn’t popular, easy, or expedient, Wilberforce stayed the course. He dedicated his life to letting his light shine in the world, a world that was often unfriendly, and the world was a better place because of it.

Question to Consider:

1. How do you answer the call of God in your life?

2. What kind of call do you think God has placed in your life?

3. How do you remain faithful to God’s call during the tough times?
