Upcoming Releases — October

We are entering into the fall hardcore with October, meaning we're getting an odd mix of award contenders, serious films, and, of course, typical Halloween fare... In other words, there is something for everyone.

Friday, Oct. 5:
Taken 2 — OK, the first film was a serviceable action film. It wasn't a personal favorite, but I can see why it appealed for some. But it didn't need a sequel. No doubt if you liked the first one, you'll enjoy this one.

Frankenweenie — A fun, animated film from Tim Burton. This won't be warm and fuzzy like a Pixar film, but it will be a fun holiday treat.

Butter — This indie comedy could be good. It has a great cast. It has a quirky plot summary. But it's gotten really mixed reviews. Who knows.

Friday, Oct. 12:
Argo — Ben Affleck might be a better director than actor, and I like him as an actor. By all accounts, this might be his best film yet. Argo is a strong Oscar contender and looks pretty awesome.

Sinister — This looks like a really creepy film. Director Scott Derrickson has done some nice films, including "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," but it's hard to tell with this film.

Here Comes The Boom — This looks like a typical Kevin James comedy. It will be funny and good for a wide audience. This also touches on a big topic, which is the lack of public education funding. That makes it fun and timely.

Seven Psychopaths — This comes from the writer/director of "In Bruges," and looks like a lot of fun. The cast is great — including Colin Farrell, Woody Harelson, and Christopher Walken. The trailer is awesome and this looks like a hidden gem of the fall.

Friday, Oct. 19:
Alex Cross — Tyler Perry dons the mantle as James Patterson's most famous detective with this drama. It's somewhat hard to take Perry seriously, so it's hard to tell with this film.

Paranormal Activity 4 — Ugh, we don't need another film in this series. But, it's Halloween time, so here comes this profitable found footage film.

Friday, Oct. 26:
Cloud Atlas — Interesting trailer and a great cast. It's hard to tell what kind of film this will be, but it could be fascinating. It could also be like "Matrix Reloaded." We just don't know.

Chasing Mavericks — I am not a big surfer, so this film doesn't totally grab me. That being said, the trailer is interesting and it could be a somewhat inspirational film. Just hard to tell.

Silent Hill: Revelation — Another Halloween horror film and another film in 3D. Here's the revelation: I won't be seeing this.

Fun Size — I like Josh Schwartz, who serves as director here, but this doesn't look like a great film. It's an odd trailer and it's hard to see how this becomes a sleeper hit.
