Fall TV Roundup, Week 7
The final post of the new fall season. There are some new shows that will premier in November, which I will get around to reviewing, but until Mid-Season, this is the final roundup of the new fall pilots. Next week I'll put up the list of my three favorite and three least favorite of the new shows. If you don't see a review of a new show here, check previous weeks.
Shows are listed by day of the week and air time. All times are Mountain Time.
Wednesday Night:
Arrow — 7 p.m. on the CW
This show is based on a D.C. Comics property, and is the heir to "Smallville" for the CW. It's got a decent cast and a decent premise. It feels a little like Batman, and that's probably intentional. It's got a bit of a comic book feel, and that's definitely intentional. I'm not 100 percent sold on this show. There's some elements that make it seem like some fun, but it feels a little bit like "Revenge" right now. Only a poorer version of "Revenge." There's promise, and the CW certainly needs a hit, so hopefully this will grow.
Pilot Grade: C+; Second Episode: C+
Nashville — 9 p.m. on ABC
This was the best reviewed new show of the new season, and it's got some promise. It certainly feels like a well-made Prime Time serial soap opera, and that's not a bad thing. Connie Britton is great in the lead role, but I'm not sold on Hayden Panetiere's character. She's not that likeable. Neither is the political sub plot. There are elements of this show that I like, but I'm not sold on the whole thing or the music. The second episode felt like a bit of a regression.
Pilot Grade: B; Second Episode: B-
Chicago Fire — 9 p.m. on NBC
NBC desperately wants this to feel like the new "ER." It doesn't. It's just not that compelling of a show or that compelling of a cast of characters. The show is perfectly serviceable, but that's about all I can say about it. There is nothing compelling that would keep you hooked from week to week. The early numbers (it declined a lot in week 2) sort of bear that out. NBC had best keep looking.
Pilot Grade: C; Second Episode: C-
