Upcoming Releases — April

Here's  a look at the movies heading our way in April.

Friday, April 5:
Evil Dead — Director Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" and its two sequels are cult classics. They were made on the cheap — maybe less so for "Army of Darkness" — have a campy quality to them, showcase the wonder that is Bruce Campbell, and have a fun spirit. None of those things appear to be true of this ultra-violent looking re-make of "Evil Dead." Well, except maybe that it was made on the cheap. That could just be a matter of personal taste. Anyway, I like the original "Evil Dead" and I can't understand what they're going for with the new version. I could be wrong, this could be great. I just don't think so.

Jurassic Park 3D — I still remember my pre-teen bliss and wonder when I saw "Jurassic Park" in the theater. I read the book, I loved the movie, and it's one of my favorites of all time. While I'm not wild about the blatant money grab happening with these 3D re-releases, I will make an exception for "Jurassic Park."

Friday, April 12:
42 — Every April Major League Baseball honors Jackie Robinson. It seems only fitting that this April Hollywood will follow suit. This looks like the best film of the month, and just a good film in general. I was sold by the trailer, and I can't wait for this one to open.

Scary Movie 5 — This. Franchise. Needs. To. Be. Euthanized.

To The Wonder — This latest film from Terrance Malick promises to polarize viewers. It also might be kind of incredible. I was one of those fascinated by the inner wondering Malick displayed with "Tree of Life." I think this might be a similar vein. It's not for everyone, but this might be fascinating. It will also, probably, be about 90 minutes too long.

Friday, April 19:
Oblivion — Ugh, I have mixed feelings about this film. First, I don't ever want to see the trailer again. Second, it could be decent. Third, I still really have no idea what it's about. Still, it looks kinda cool. But I really didn't care for "Tron Legacy," which was also directed by Joseph Kosinski, who did this one. So who knows...

Lords of Salem — Oh Rob Zombie, will you never tire of giving the world ultra violent "B" horror films? I guess not.

Friday, April 26:
Pain and Gain — Michael Bay may never be considered a great artists, but he is a master at his craft. Either you love his movies, or you don't. I do, and I think this one — featuring Mark Wahlberg and The Rock as body builders turned thieves — looks great!

The Big Wedding — Remember when Katherine Heigl was an Emmy winner with a budding film star? Yeah, good times. Now we get movies like this — which was delayed for months and, honestly, could be delayed forever and I wouldn't mind. Why is Robert De Niro in this film? It's an age-old question we will likely never have answered.
