Upcoming Releases — October

After surviving the summer season and languishing through some rough weeks in September, Christmas has come early for serious movie fans. October has a number of high profile projects that could be serious contenders come Award season. Enjoy!

Friday, October 4:
Gravity — "Children of Men" was one of the finest movies the year it was released, and remains a personal favorite. Sadly it was passed over for lesser fare. This time director Alfonso Cuaron, the visionary behind "Children of Men," is back with a movie that looks incredible. And he's brought some high-profile friends in stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. This could be one of the most fascinating and daring films of the year.

Runner Runner — Ben Affleck has proven a great director and a solid actor. Justin Timberlake is good in comedies. Both will be playing against type here. Affleck will try his hand at being a larger-than-life villain, while Timberlake is the dramatic foil and protagonist here. Still, this looks like it could be an entertaining film.

Friday, October 11:
Captain Phillips — This is the latest film from director Paul Greengrass and stars Tom Hanks. The trailers look strong, and the film is based on an incredible true story. The stakes are sufficiently high and the production looks like a home run.

Machette Kills — I wasn't a huge fan of "Machette." I guess I kind of liked the idea, and I liked what Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino did with "Grindhouse," but as full-length features, I don't buy the "Machette" brand. This feels like the kind of ultra violent film that will do well with a certain demographic, I'm just not in it.

Romeo and Juliet — Do we need another cinematic take on this Shakespeare play? No, but we're getting it anyway. I love what Julian Fellows has done with "Downton Abbey," so this could work. Still, it's a familiar story that will be told in a traditional way.

Friday, October 18:
The Fifth Estate — Benedict Cumberbatch is having a moment, and that will continue as he plays the lead in this film about Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. This look like a tightly constructed thriller.

Carrie — I'm not sure this Stephen King novel needed to get a re-make. The original is sufficiently creepy. But, just in time for Halloween, here we have yet another "Carrie" film. This time with Chloe Grace-Moretz in the titular role and Julianne Moore as her equally cracked mother.

Escape Plan — This is an action adventure starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Last time I checked, it's 2013. If this was 1993, we could all get excited. But it's 2013, so no dice.

12 Years a Slave (Limited) — This film, which looks like a Best Picture contender, gets a limited release here. Likely it won't be until closer to the end of the year that we get to see it, but it's worth seeking out.

Friday, October 25:
The Counselor — This film, based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy and directed by Ridley Scott, features a strong cast and looks incredible. Among the leads are Javier Bardem, Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, and Brad Pitt. This looks like a fascinating crime drama that could be an award contender.

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa — Have you ever wanted to see Johnny Knoxville in age make up pretending to be the world's worst grandpa? Well do I have a film for you....

Blue Is the Warmest Color — This is another award contender that was the talk of the Cannes Film Festival. It's NC-17, so it will be hard to find. It's about a lesbian relationship, so some may find it hard to watch. But it's rumored to have some incredible lead performances.
