Week One Roundup

After five days, the first week of the NFL season came to a close. It was a revelatory week, full of surprises. Below are some thoughts on what we learned after one full week of games.

1. The old guard of the AFC is struggling. Sure, the Broncos looked good on Thursday, but the other division winners from a year ago struggled. The New England Patriots need to find offense, having to come back at the end of the game to top the Buffalo Bills and their rookie quarterback. The Ravens clearly have some holes. And the Houston Texans struggled on defense for a half, falling behind 28-7 to the San Diego Chargers before rallying for victory. These were four presumed contenders and division winners, but aside from the Broncos no one looked good in week one.

2. The AFC North is in trouble. The Ravens got blown out on Thursday night, the Cincinnati Bengals are still their own worst enemy and the Cleveland Browns still don't have an offense. But the biggest issue might be in Pittsburgh. Prior to Sunday, the Steelers divided a lot of opinion. I thought they'd be average and out of the playoffs, but some people predicted they would win the division and contend for a title. On Sunday, they looked worse than anyone expected. They had no offense and look old on defense — and that was at home against the Tennessee Titans.

3. The Eagles new offense is impressive. The Eagles rattled off 53 first half plays and 26 points on Monday night. They hit the breaks a bit after building a huge lead, but this offense looks as exciting as advertised through one week.

4. RGIII isn't ready to come back. The Washington Redskins scuffled a lot on Monday night, and RGIII never looked like the rookie of the year from a year ago. There was even a piece today saying he needs to sit for a few weeks. Though the 'Skins played well in the second half, at times, this could spell early doom for a pre-season favorite.

5. The Raiders, Bills, and Jets might be better than you think. Of the three, only the Jets won on Sunday. That being said, the Bills and Raiders each held leads over playoff teams from a year ago. The Raiders looked explosive, at times, on offense and nearly pulled the upset. The Bills, meanwhile, look to be in good shape with E.J. Manuel at the helm, nearly upsetting the New England Patriots.

6. Fantasy Football is still frustrating. It took just one Sunday for me to realize why I hate Fantasy Football. I got a record game from Peyton Manning on Thursday night and still lost in week one. Ugh...
