Upcoming Releases — December

The holiday movie season is upon us!

Friday, December 6:
Out Of The Furnace — This film, from the director of "Crazy Heart" and starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck, looks like a cross between "Justified" and "The Town." It looks like it could be a compelling drama and likely features a great performance from Bale.

Friday, December 13:
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug — Peter Jackson's epic, three-part take on the children's book continues with this second installment. This one will feature the dragon, Smaug, and a continuation of the journey. I am curious to see where it goes.

Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas — Madea, the mouthy old lady with a heart of gold, is back in this holiday themed adventure.

Wednesday, December 18:
Her — This film from Spike Jonze — the director behind "Being John Malkovich" and "Where The Wild Things Are" — looks fascinating and strange. It features a key performance from Joaquin Phoenix and the voice talents of Scarlett Johansson, who is in the running for a supporting nomination though she doesn't appear on screen.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues — The misadventures of Ron Burgandy and his news team continues. For those looking for comedy that loved the first one, Merry Christmas.

Friday, December 20:
Saving Mr. Banks — This is the untold story of how Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) adapted the classic film "Mary Poppins." It features a performance from Emma Thompson and looks like a wonderful holiday story.

Walking With Dinosaurs — This is the big animated release of the holiday season. This should be a big hit with the kids.

Wednesday, December 25:
American Hustle — This is the latest from David O. Russell and features an all-star cast that includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Bradley Cooper. This looks like one of the year's best.

The Wolf of Wall Street — This latest film from Martin Scorsese again features Leonardo DiCaprio and looks like it has some compelling storylines. But it's been delayed once this year and is reported to run more than three hours, so it remains to be seen.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty — I don't know why, but the trailer for this film gets me every time. I love Kristen Wiig and Ben Stiller, so I think this could be a really fun film. It has the makings of a classic.

47 Ronin — This samurai action film starring Keanu Reeves is a straight up special effects driven action film. Hard to see how this fits with a Christmas release date.

Grudge Match — I am sure at one point in time a boxing movie starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone would have been awesome. But in 2013, I'm having trouble getting excited about this one.
