Broncos Offseason Update, Post-Draft

In the next couple months, the Broncos, much like the rest of the teams in the NFL, will begin their off-season training, and pre-season workouts in earnest. The dust has settled from most of the Free Agency slog, and the draft picks have all been added.

So before the season starts in earnest, it's time to look at the good, the bad, and the unknown for the 2014 Broncos, a team hoping to get to the Super Bowl again.

The Good:
* The Broncos added some new passing weapons. Sure, Eric Decker is a loss, but the Broncos have Emmanuel Sanders, who will fill a role and add some speed, and drafted Cody Latimer, a tall, strong receiver who some have said is in the Demariyus Thomas mold. So, I think the Broncos will be OK there.

* The Broncos have worked to add secondary depth. Aquib Talib and T.J. Ward add veteran talent. Chris Harris continues to develop, as does Rahim Moore, Duke Ihenachio, and Kavon Webster. Then the Broncos went out and got Bradley Roby to add depth. It's a good, somewhat young group.

The Bad:
* Who will play middle linebacker? The Broncos have been insolvent at middle linebacker for a few years. Letting Wesley Woodyard, who has heart and talent, go seems bad. But the fact that it's possibly Nate Irving then who knows vying for that position seems like a problem.

* Who will returns punts and kicks? Trindon Holliday was a great weapon his first year in Denver and became a great liability in his second. I understood letting him go. I don't understand risking Wes Welker, a key offensive player with a history of head injuries, on punt returns. Come on Broncos, think it through!

The Unknown:
* Who will run the ball? I sort of understood letting Knowshon Moreno go, but he was the only strong, reliable back for the Broncos last year. So far, it seems the Broncos are hoping Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman can finally step up. Behind them? Only a handful of undrafted free agents and rookies. This feels like a tough spot to be in.

* Will the pass rush be consistent? On paper, a return of Derek Wolfe, the addition of DeMarcus Ware and a full season of Von Miller feels like the Broncos have some weapons there. The team hasn't added much in free agency or the draft to bolster the line, so they need big years from those three and tackles Terrance Knighton and Sylvester Williams.
