F/X Comedy Hit?

It's been an interesting summer — and an interesting time — for F/X. The network did well in collecting Emmy nominations, thanks in large part to mini-series "Fargo" and "American Horror Story." Meanwhile some of its top dramas, "Justified" and "Sons of Anarchy," are entreating their final seasons. In other words, F/X will have some holes to fill, especially since we don't know if another round of "Fargo" will happen.

Like so many cable networks in a similar position, F/X has tried to find the next big thing this summer. But, despite a creative resurgence, viewers haven't flocked to the second season of "The Bridge." "The Strain," the network's answer to "The Walking Dead," has had passable ratings, but hasn't been great or drawn a lot of eyeballs. And "Tyrant," supposedly the next "Homeland," was critically savaged and didn't draw well — though it's gotten a second season.

Then there's the F/X comedies. In the middle of summer, late on Thursday nights, F/X debuted a pair of sitcoms — "Married" starring Nat Faxon and Judy Greer and "You're The Worst." It was hard to know what to make of them. "Married" had the better known cast and prestige, but there was something about the pilot for "You're The Worst" that was a little better.

Throughout the first 10-episode season (which wrapped for both last night) that's continued. "You're The Worst" has, surprisingly, developed into one of the best shows of summer while "Married," despite a talented cast, has been up-and-down. Now we're awaiting word on whether one or both shows has been renewed for a second season.

For my part, I hope at least "You're The Worst" gets a second season. What started out as a seemingly an anti-love story between two caustic people has been surprisingly sweet at times, genuinely earnest at times, and easily the most amusing of the new comedies this summer or — likely — this fall. It hasn't been a ratings juggernaut, but nothing has for F/X.

This has been a down summer for the network. I still like "The Bridge," but I might be one of only a handful of people watching. The networks other two dramas were poor, and I abandoned them quickly. The fact "Tyrant" got a second season probably speaks to the state of the F/X development slate, and it's quickly disappearing hit shows.

In that environment, given the network challenges, why not take a chance on "You're The Worst." It might not have the star power of "Married" or "Partners," the other F/X sitcom to premier this summer, but the leads are likable and have great chemistry. Chris Geere and Aya Cash — who play the caustic, hesitant couple at the center of the show — have been the finds of the summer. In fact, in a season that was jam-packed with new shows from almost every network, these two and "You're The Worst" have been some of the most pleasant surprises.

"You're The Worst" isn't family-friendly (though what on TV now really is), and it's certainly not a brand of comedy that works for everyone, but it's a well-crafted show with an interesting story to tell. It's the kind of show that deserves more episodes. Now we just have to wait and see if F/X gives it to them, or if we're doomed to endure another 90 episodes of "Partners" instead.
