Upcoming Releases — May
Summer is here folks, at least at the movies. The Summer Movie Season begins in May, and May begins on Friday. Here's a look at the blockbusters and sleepers coming during the first month of summer movies.
Friday, May 1:
Avengers: Age of Ultron — The first "Avengers" movie set Box Office records, and I expect more of the same from this sequel. The movie opened overseas last weekend and it's already made more than $200 million. This is a big movie, with a big cast, and big expectations.
Far From the Maddening Crowed (Limited) — This is the anti-"Avengers." It's a period piece based on a Thomas Hardy novel starring Carey Mulligan.
Welcome to Me (Limited) — This off-beat Kristen Wiig comedy has drawn some good reviews. It's a chance to see a talented lead actress stretch herself in a comedy/drama with a unique take.
Friday, May 8:
Hot Pursuit — Summer is always a time for big comedies, and this is the latest. Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara headline this female buddy comedy.
The D Train — This is a buddy comedy of another sort, starring Jack Black and James Marsden as a mis-matched pair heading to their 20th High School Reunion.
Friday, May 15:
Mad Max: Fury Road — It's been decades since Mel Gibson last suited up as "Mad Max." In this new installment, Tom Hardy dons the mantle for more post-apocalyptic car chases.
Pitch Perfect 2 — The sequel to the surprise acapella hit, this one brings the entire gang back together and raises the stakes. Elizabeth Banks takes over the director's chair for what might be one of the gems of summer.
I'll See You in My Dreams (Limited) — This is a romance for the mature set. The film, starring Blythe Danner and Sam Elliot, has drawn strong reviews from film festivals.
Friday, May 22:
Tomorrowland — Director Brad Bird teams with George Clooney and Hugh Laurie to bring this Disney land to life. The trailer looks great, and this seems to have the potential to be the film with the greatest sense of wonder this summer.
Poltergeist — The original was one of the scariest movies of all time. But, what's old is new again, as a new cast and crew take on this familiar story to provide a few thrills and chills during Memorial Day weekend.
Friday, May 29:
San Andreas — This looks like a CGI spectacle as a cast that includes Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson try to stay alive following a massive earthquake in California. Having lived through a few California earthquakes, and with a penchant for disaster films, this looks to be right in my wheelhouse.
Aloha — Cameron Crowe's latest is another star-studded drama/comedy, this one set in Hawaii, starring Bradley Cooper, and a military back drop. This looks like it could be fascinating counter-programming.
