Emmy Preview Picks, Part 2
Yesterday I previewed the Comedy part of the Emmys, today I'm going to look at Drama and Limited Series. Of course, the real best Drama this year should be "The Leftovers," which wasn't even nominated. So I'm making these picks under protest, just know that.
“Better Call Saul” (AMC)
“The Crown” (Netflix)
“The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)
“House of Cards” (Netflix)
“Stranger Things” (Netflix)
“This Is Us” (NBC)
“Westworld” (HBO)
And the Winner Is: I think "The Handmaid's Tale" will get the win here, and it's a worthy option in this group. However, my personal pick would be "Stranger Things," which is a dark horse here. I also think "The Crown" and "Westworld" have outside shots. This is a tough group.
Drama Actress
Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”)
Claire Foy (“The Crown”)
Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Keri Russell (“The Americans”)
Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”)
Robin Wright (“House of Cards”)
And the Winner Is: I feel like Claire Foy could be the call here, or even Robin Wright, but the winner should be Elisabeth Moss, who was fantastic in a dark and difficult role.
Drama Actor
Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”)
Anthony Hopkins (“Westworld”)
Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”)
Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”)
Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”)
Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”)
Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”)
And the Winner Is: I think Sterling K. Brown could sneak in here, but there are plenty of worthy options. I love Matthew Rhys, but it wasn't a great year for "The Americans." I think a true dark horse is Bob Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul."
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
John Lithgow (“The Crown”)
Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”)
Mandy Patinkin (“Homeland”)
Michael Kelly (“House of Cards”)
David Harbour (“Stranger Things”)
Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us”)
Jeffrey Wright (“Westworld”)
And the Winner Is: I like John Lithgow here. Other possibilities are David Harbour, who is great in "Stranger Things," and Jonathan Banks for "Better Caul Saul." But I feel like this should be Lithgow.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”)
Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”)
Chrissy Metz (“This Is Us”)
Thandie Newton (“Westworld”)
And the Winner Is: This is a tough category, and I could see it going a lot of ways. It's probably going to Ann Dowd from "The Handmaid's Tale," but I think it should go to Millie Bobby Brown, who was INCREDIBLE in "Stranger Things."
Limited Series
“Big Little Lies” (HBO)
“Fargo” (FX)
“Feud: Bette and Joan” (FX)
“The Night Of” (HBO)
“Genius” (National Geographic)
And the Winner Is: This is always a tough category. "The Night Of" had plenty of critical buzz, but it's been so long. I think the winner here is "Big Little Lies," a high-profile project I didn't love.
Limited Series Actor
Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”)
Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock: The Lying Detective”)
Robert De Niro (“The Wizard of Lies”)
Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”)
Geoffrey Rush (“Genius”)
John Turturro (“The Night Of”)
And the Winner Is: Another difficult category that I don't have a great feel for. I think Robert De Niro could win here because he's the biggest name in the group.
Limited Series Actress
Carrie Coon (“Fargo”)
Felicity Huffman (“American Crime”)
Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”)
Jessica Lange (“Feud”)
Susan Sarandon (“Feud”)
Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”)
And the Winner Is: This will probably go to either Witherspoon or Kidman, but I think the winner should be Carrie Coon. Her role, and the season of "Fargo," wasn't great. But she should win all the awards for "The Leftovers," and there might be enough fans to carry the day here.
Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Bill Camp (“The Night Of”)
Alfred Molina (“Feud: Bette and Joan”)
Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd (“Big Little Lies”)
David Thewlis (“Fargo”)
Stanley Tucci (“Feud: Bette and Joan”)
Michael K. Williams (“The Night Of”)
And the Winner Is: It's hard to bet against "Big Little Lies," which could dominate this category. But I'm going with Alfred Molina here. He was very good in a sort of important but thankless role in the first season of "Feud."
Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Judy Davis (“Feud: Bette and Joan”)
Laura Dern (“Big Little Lies”)
Jackie Hoffman (“Feud: Bette and Joan”)
Regina King (“American Crime”)
Michelle Pfeiffer (“The Wizard of Lies”)
Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”)
And the Winner Is: This has to be either Dern or Woodley, and I'm leaning toward Dern. Regina King is always a dark horse, but this season of "American Crime" really faded into the background.
