Veteran TV Check In — Hawaii 5-0

One of the shows that came into this season under a microscope was "Hawaii 5-0," the veteran CBS drama that airs on Friday nights. The show began its eighth season in September, but there were a lot of questions after two of the original stars quit the show.

In response — "Hawaii 5-0" brought in a couple new characters played by Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale to reboot the season. The question was how the show would work and how it would come together. Would it be the same show?

I follow "Hawaii 5-0" and have watched it since it first debuted. I enjoy it for what it is, which is essentially a low-key action show. Sure, there's some procedural elements. But "Hawaii 5-0" never felt like the typical CBS crime drama, it felt more outlandish and more based on action sequences and a few personal touches. It's popcorn television, which made it a perfect feel for Friday nights.

And I hadn't imagined when it started that the show would last this long, but it keeps plugging along. And the lost of Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park was a bit of a blow. I liked both actors and their characters, and it was strange for original characters to go so suddenly. I won't comment on what happened behind the scenes, because I don't really know. But in terms of a show, while the loss of the two has been felt in some awkward moments, and it's been hard to get to know the new characters and where they're going, the show feels pretty similar.

The show has kind of evolved into a buddy comedy between McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and Danny Williams (Scott Caan), and that remains intact. This season has yielded three episodes so far, and it feels very much like the same show. Some faces are missing, but the show's basic structure and the two characters at the core remain the same.

This has never been an incredibly original or highly rated series, but it's one that seems to have found a groove and an audience. And as long as the costs remain reasonable — and this change probably helped that the most — I could see it carrying on for several more seasons.
