Best Picture Nominees — Phantom Thread

On Sunday, March 4 we'll learn which one of nine films nominated for Best Picture will claim the top prize. Between now and then, I'll be looking at each of the Best Picture Nominees, continuing today with "Phantom Thread."

Phantom Thread
Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Maneville, and Vicky Krieps
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Total Nominations: 6
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Actor (Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actress (Manville), Best Director (Anderson), Best Original Score, and Best Costume Design
About: "Phantom Thread" is a fantastic film, coming from Paul Thomas Anderson and re-teaming him with Day-Lewis, who was the star of his film "There Will Be Blood." It's been a highly anticipated film, and one that will feature Day-Lewis' last performance. But most were unsure what would happen with the film when it came to the Academy Awards. Shockingly, the film earned six nominations and became part of the Best Picture and Best Director races. Now, it's a long-shot to win Best Picture, and it's probably not likely to win most of the awards it is nominated for, despite the fact it's a complex and brilliant film. The two best odds seem to be in the acting races, where Manville, a surprise addition to the Best Supporting Actress race, and Day-Lewis are both dark horse candidates. I think of those two, Day-Lewis is the most likely. However, the most likely outcome in general might be that the film, though one of my favorites in the field, doesn't get a single award on March 4. But we'll see.
Rating: Rated R for language.
Verdict: Four stars out of Four.
Where to See It: The film is now playing nationwide.
