Fantasy Movie League: A Quiet Super Bowl Weekend

Last week was an interesting one. While Glass was again atop the Box Office, the smart money seemed to be on The Upside to return better value. And I also thought one of the recent Best Picture Nominees could get a Box Office boost. I bet on Bohemian Rhapsody.

Turns out a combo of Glass, The Upside and Green Book, which captured Best Value, was the way to go. It was the Perfect Cineplex and the Most Popular Cineplex. So that was a blow to my season standings. But if last week was tricky to guess, it’s nothing compared to this Super Bowl weekend.
Whether you liked the outcome of the championship games or not, or whether you even like football or not, you’re likely watching TV Sunday afternoon and evening. With much of the country enduring rough weather, followed by the big game on Sunday, the Box Office projections aren’t what you’d call robust.

But then again, neither are your options. There’s only one new release, and it doesn’t scream must see. That means a lot of left overs that give people little reason to leave their houses, or appetizers, this weekend. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. Let’s see how this week stacks up.

New at the Box Office:

There’s just one new entry into the game. While the documentary They Shall Not Grow Old is getting a wide release this weekend, it hasn’t been included in the game. The only new entry is Miss Bala, which was originally slated for late January and moved to February 1 to get a run on its own. It might need it. The film boasts just a 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and the trailer doesn’t give me a lot of hope. It’s $158 FML Bucks, third most in the game, and projected at $5.8 million by Fantasy Movie League, in third place. That’s not great. But they’re by far the lowest. Box Office Pro sees $6.5 million, while Box Office Report calls for $10 million and first place. So if you believe it could outperform its expectations, then Miss Bala is an incredible value.

The Search for the Best Value

This week is tough. Glass and The Upside are the most expensive options, and both are projected in the Top Three at the Box Office. That seems likely to happen given the competition, as last week’s new movies didn’t even move the needle opening weekend. But both those movies would seem to skew toward males, who are likely to be tuned to the Super Bowl this weekend. It sort of makes sense that Miss Bala, led by Gina Rodriguez and seemingly aiming at a more female audience, would get a boost. If I was to go toward one of the holdovers, it would be Glass, which has consistent projections between $9.5 and $9.8 million and costs $215 FML Bucks, just $14 more than The Upside.

Among the Academy Award movies, Green Book will still do well, but at $102 FML Bucks this week I doubt it offers big value. Based on projections, none of the lower options stands out as greater than the others, so go with your gut.

This Week’s Lineup:

If Miss Bala hits high, that’s a great week. If not, I took a chance. I’m taking that chance.
