2019 Broncos' Season, Impending Free Agency


On Thursday, the other shoe dropped in the Broncos' quarterback situation. When the Broncos agreed to trade for Joe Flacco, it seemed to signal the end for Case Keenum. But in recent weeks, the Broncos seemed to cool on top QB prospects in the 2019 draft, while John Elway indicated they'd like to keep Case, too, albeit at a lower price point.

On Thursday, that lower price point became a reality, but the Broncos moved on from Keenum as he was traded to the Washington Redskins. That does a few things for the Broncos, including give uncertainty again at the biggest position in the game. Even with Flacco, a 34-year-old passer with a tough injury history, the Broncos only have Garrett Grayson under contract. While I wouldn't rule out them grabbing someone in Free Agency, it still seems likely they draft someone. Meaning the Broncos will likely enter 2019 with a completely different quarterback room, and probably quite a few questions.

But what Keenum's trade really does is save a ton of cap space for the Broncos. The team, when accounting for the draft pool, now has $36 million in cap space for Free Agency. With the rumor Brandon Marshall will also be released, the at could add an additional $4.8 million to that total, giving Denver $40 million to play with.

So what are the going to use that money on? Here's some ideas:

Offensive Line:
The Broncos really need help here. Going into Free Agency, the team has Garrett Bolles, Connor McGovern, Ronald Leary and Elijah Wilkinson under contract. There are few others, but those are relevant names with experience. While the draft can provide some prospects, the Broncos need to make a splash here. A couple names to consider.

* Matt Paradis, C. This is re-signing one of our own, but it needs to be a priority. Paradis has been a rock in the middle for Denver, and the team needs a quality center.

* Ju'Wan James, RT. James is a right tackle candidate, and a good one. The Broncos need to solidify that position and hope that coach Mike Mularky can help Bolles be the answer on the left side.

Secondary:
The Broncos have some holes. At corner, the team has Chris Harris, Jr., and Isaac Yiadom, with rumors that Brendan Langley is moving to receiver. So that leaves them thin. The draft will likely be part of the answer. At safety, the team is moving on from Darian Stewart, but still has Justin Simmons, Will Parks and Su'a Cravens. Still, they'll need to bolster the position, whether it's in the draft or through free agency. Here's some targets.

Landon Collins, Eric Weddle, Tyrann Mathieu, FS. The Broncos want to upgrade at Free Safety, and I like all three of these free agent options. Any of them could do some good for the team and be an upgrade at the position. It just depends on cost.

Kayvon Webster, CB. Look, I know it's not a big name, but he was great as a depth player and a Special Teamer for the Broncos when he was here, and he's likely to add some veteran depth at an affordable price. Then Denver can monitor other big names and see where the market settles.

Linebacker:
Another position where the Broncos could have options in the draft, but with Marshall and others heading out,  the Broncos could you a boost here, particularly in the middle. With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb holding the pass rush positions on the outside, and Todd Davis and Josey Jewell in the middle, the Broncos have a good start. But more is needed.

CJ Mosely, ILB. There are a few names on the list that look interesting or promising, but I would really like to get Mosely. I think he would add some ferocity to the middle.

The legal tampering period begins Monday, and Free Agency follows Wednesday, so it's going to be fun to see what happens.

  It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?
