2019 Broncos' Season, Roster Needs Defense
Yesterday I looked at some of the good, bad, and ugly of Free Agency, today I'm going to look at where the Broncos sit on defense. I'll look at offense tomorrow.
Of course, Free Agency took a turn last night as the Broncos signed Bryce Callahan. So on defense, let's look at the secondary first.
Secondary:
On the Roster: Chris Harris, Jr., Kareem Jackson, Bryce Callahan, Isaac Yiadom, Justin Simmons, Will Parks, Su'a Cravens, Jamal Carter, Shamarko Thomas
About: With Harris and Jackson the Broncos have a pair of strong pass defenders out at corner, with Callahan and Yiadom providing depth. The Broncos also have a bunch of young safeties, led by Simmons and Parks. With the two signings in Jackson and Callahan, the Broncos did a lot to re-build this unit. It now looks like it could once again be a strength.
What's Next: The Broncos will likely add to this group, either through the draft or smaller signings. But I'd say the top end core here is likely set.
Linebackers:
On the Roster: Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Jeff Holland, A.J. Johnson, Joe Jones, Todd Davis, Josey Jewell, Keishawn Bierria
About: This is a unit that has good anchors in Miller, Chubb, Davis and Jewell, and has some depth pieces with promise like Holland and Johnson. But nothing has happened with this unit in free agency, so there is still some work to be done.
What's Next: The Broncos will have to address this for depth if nothing else. I'd say Devin White at pick 10 is a real possibility, and either way there will likely be at least one LB among the Broncos' draft picks.
Defensive Line:
On the Roster: Derek Wolfe, Adam Gotsis, Shelby Harris, DeMarcus Walker, Zach Kerr
About: By picking up the option on Wolfe and signing Harris and Kerr back, the Broncos have something to work with. But this is arguably still the thinnest unit on defense. Harris and Kerr could give the Broncos some push up the middle, but unless Walker develops this unit will still have some major issues and needs more personnel.
What's Next: The Broncos still need to address this unit. Harris might be the man in the middle, so my guess is the team will look to the draft to grab some more players on the outside.
