Change is a Coming

"I'm on the verge of changing the world in a way he never could, and he can't face it." - Simon Hays, "God Friended Me"

As we hurtle toward the end of the first season of "God Friended Me," it's clear change is on the horizon. Change for everyone. But will it be good or bad? That we don't yet know. But we do no, no matter what, it will require adjustment and sacrifice. And that was something that everyone was considering during last night's episode, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant."

That was even evident in the case of the week, which saw Miles (Brandon Michael Hall) and Cara (Violett Beane) sent to an Italian Restaurant on their first date. It didn't go well as a romantic outing, but it did introduce them to Caterina (Cate Bottiglione), the daughter of the restaurant owner and an aspiring chef. But her father didn't see he way of thinking, so she sought to strike out on her own.

It didn't go as planned, but with help from Miles and Cara her father seemed to understand her desire and motivation, and in the end decided it was time to make a change. It meant selling his business and investing in the future.

The process also allowed Miles and Cara some time to consider their own change. They wondered if it would work, and in fact Miles sought advice from his father, Arthur (Joe Morton, who also directed the episode) about whether it could happen. His father urged that spark is either there, or it isn't.

Afraid of losing their friendship, they both seemed content not to press the issue. Until the party for Caterina pressed it for them. The kiss they shared certainly points toward a possible romantic future, which keeps the auspice of change and what it could mean floating.

For Arthur, that change comes in the form of a young priest (Gaius Charles). They've sparred a bit the past few weeks, but it seemed for most of last night's hour that things were coming to a head, with Arthur being pushed out. Turns out he is, but not like his kids think. He's being offered a promotion, to Bishop of New York. It's a great opportunity and honor, but one that means leaving his church in the hands of another. Arthur seemed to be wrestling with this decision, and it will be interesting to see which path he takes.

Finally, Rakesh (Suraj Sharma) made progress in his search for the author of the God account. Simon Hays (Adam Goldberg) asked him to root out a network intrusion from Henry Chase. Rakesh succeeded, and it made him believe that Hays is the one running the account all along, suspecting that's the top secret project he'll soon be working on.

That led to a shift of focus for our team in the long-running investigation that, as I've noted, is the least interesting part of the show to me. But I'll be curious to see how it turns out, and I assume we'll get an answer in some sense over the final few episodes.

Either way, change is brewing.
