End of the small screen MCU


We still have the third season of Jessica Jones forthcoming, but that will be the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Netflix. It's a universe that spanned five named heroes, six shows and at least four years.

The world began with "Daredevil" in 2015. By the time we reached 2017, four more heroes had rolled out in their own shows. And, of course, that led to the ultimate plan. Like the cinematic universe, the introduction of the pieces were meant to lead to a larger team. In the summer of 2017, we got that team in "The Defenders."

It wasn't perfect, but it was a fun and ambitious project, and it produced some good performances, some good stories and some good seasons of TV. But with Marvel moving on to other projects on its own Disney streaming service, it was a partnership that seemed destined to end.

And like that, Netflix set about cancelling each of the series. When "Iron Fist" was cancelled after its second season, it wasn't a huge surprise. While I thought the show made strides in season two, it wasn't exactly the greatest or most crisp product. "Luke Cage" also got the ax at that time. While it wasn't my favorite, it still seemed mildly surprise that the show was cancelled. It had a lot of fans, including from critics.

Later, the third season of "Daredevil" was released, and I thought it was pretty darn good. Shortly after its release, it was cancelled. And that's when it became clear everything was going to go. "The Punisher" was cancelled after the release of its second season in early 2019, and "Jessica Jones" was cancelled before its final season could even debut. And with that, the Marvel universe was over. Presumably that means we won't get another round of "The Defenders," which also feels like a shame.

As someone who's seen all of these seasons, I'm going to miss them. I'm still excited and hopeful about the final season of "Jessica Jones," which will mark the end. And I can't help but wonder if we'll see anything like this again when Marvel transitions to the new Disney service.

Fall TV Roundup, Week 16

  It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.
