Fantasy Movie League: The Captain is Here!


The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man in 2008 and now stretches through 20 feature films. With the release of Captain Marvel on Friday, and Avengers: End Game in April, that cinematic world will be forever changed. To say there’s a lot riding on Brie Larson and her titular hero is an understatement. But more on that in a minute.

Last week there wasn’t much new at the Box Office, and what new there was remained unappealing. So it was tough to determine value. I went with Alita: Battle Angel over eight screens hoping to hit value and boost my score. It was a noble attempt, or rather a noble failure. I was way off the pace. Not a good follow up to my Perfect Cineplex. This week I’ll try to do better.

We only have one new film in the game this week, but it brings the return of daily scoring. So there’s the challenge in and of itself! New at the Box Office:

As I noted, the only new movie is Captain Marvel, but it’s a big one. It will certainly be the top film at the Box Office, and could help pull the Box Office out of a few slow months. And people are pumped. The pre-sale numbers already are out-pacing Wonder Woman. It has also done well with reviews, posting an 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Certainly it will draw big crowds, especially during preview screenings tonight. As you’d expect, Fantasy Movie League has opted for daily scoring. So part of the work is figuring out where the best value lies.

Box Office Report is projecting $151 million for the weekend. Fantasy Movie League is projecting $60.3 million Friday, $54 million Saturday and $40.1 million Sunday for a total of $154.4 million for the weekeend. So the trick is measuring possible value against cost. Friday (which typically includes Thursday preview screenings) is the most expensive at $510 FML Bucks, with $451 FML Bucks for Saturday and $345 for Sunday. You will want to have Captain Marvel in your Cineplex, it’s just a matter of how much.

The Search for the Best Value:

Madea made a run last week, and did fairly well, but How to Train Your Dragon again remained atop the Box Office. It’s the fourth most expensive option in the game this week, behind the three Marvels, but is low enough it could fill your Cineplex if you thought that would bring you value. At $151 FML Bucks you could play it on as many as six screens, with Fantasy Movie League showing $16.6 million. Box Office Report shows $15.7 million, so if you thought it would be at the high end and return value, you could make a case for it. But I think it could easily get swallowed by Captain Marvel.

Madea is a bit of counter-programming, as the audiences don’t figure to overlap a ton. It had a strong opening week, and is priced at $104 FML Bucks, meaning it could play over all eight screens. It’s projected at $11 million on Fantasy Movie League, but $12.7 million by Box Office Report. So it could yield value if it exceeds expectations.

Fall TV Roundup, Week 16

  It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.
