Upcoming Releases, April 2019
We've turned the corner to April and by month's end, summer will officially have begun. But there's gonna be some fun times leading up to that, too.
Friday, April 5:
Shazam!—This comes from D.C., but is the rare modern D.C. film that looks like it has heart and humor. I've long appreciated Zachary Levi as a performer, and I'm excited to see this movie, which looks like a kick.
Pet Sematary—This re-make based on the Stephen King novel looks sufficiently creepy. King has had a resurgence of late, and I think this could be one of the better entries this spring.
Best of Enemies—Based on the true story, Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson star as staunch advocates on opposite sides of the debate on race pulled together to come up with a solution after a school burns down. This looks like a fierce and interesting tale.
Friday, April 12:
Hellboy—Another re-make, this time featuring David Harbour in the lead role. Looks like a fun action film.
Little—This comedy starring Regina Hall and Issa Rae is about a bully of a woman who is transformed back into a child to learn a lesson. It looks like a bit of fun.
The Missing Link—This animated feature includes a voice cast led by Hugh Jackman and Zach Galifianakis about a primitive creature who is discovered and invited to re-join society. It's been a good year for animated films, and I think this could be an addition to that group.
After—Based on a novel, this one is about some sort of romance. It likely has some kind of built in audience based on fans of the book, but the trailer doesn't really give me a feel for this film.
Wednesday, April 17:
Breakthrough—This faith-based film is about a couple, and a town, praying for healing for a young boy who falls through the ice and ends up in a coma. I'd wager he makes it...
Penguins—Around Earth Day each year Disney has been releasing a nature documentary. For 2019, it's on Penguins, and it looks adorable.
Friday, April 19:
The Curse of La Llorona—A staple of every month of the year is low-budget horror films. This year, for Good Friday, we get one based on a Spanish legend. Be prepared to be creeped out.
Friday, April 26:
Avengers: End Game—Welcome to summer. As they did last year, the Avengers get a jump on the rest of summer with their next battle against Thanos. Do you need me to sell you on this?
