Fantasy Movie League: Avengers is Here!

So last week was really a bummer. I thought Shazam! would be the best anchor, but I also believed in the power of nature — and cuteness — by betting on those Disney Penguins. Well, Shazam! was a solid anchor, but it was another superhero — Captain Marvel — that provided the best value. And my Penguins flopped, as did my Cineplex.

Well this week it all about superheroes again. Summer unofficially kicks off at the movies as Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters. The film is already breaking records and should be the biggest opening of the year. As expected, that means daily scoring, which adds a new wrinkle.
So you’ll want a piece of the Avengers, but what else can help lead you to victory. It’s time to dive in.
As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. And if you’d like to play against TMR himself, Matthew Berry, you have a bit of time left to sign up HERE for this special league competition. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office

There is only one new entry this week, and it figures to suck up all the oxygen at the Box Office for weeks to come. That new release is Avengers: Endgame, perhaps you’ve heard of it? This is the culmination of more than 10 years and 21 films worth of stories, and it’s going to be huge. It is also really, really good. Rotten Tomatoes shows it as having a 96 percent critical score. So that will only add to what figures to be an enormous Box Office haul.

As you’d expect, the film is in daily scoring. Friday is the most expensive at $529 FML Bucks, while Saturday comes in at $386 FML Bucks and Sunday at $320 FML Bucks. And that aligns with the projections. Box Office Report shows as weekend haul of $280 million. Fantasy Movie League shows $120.1 million for Friday, which seems low to me considering it should include the record-setting Thursday preview screenings. It shows Saturday at $88.1 million and Sunday at $71.3 million. The question is what provides the best value as an anchor, because you need at least one of these.

The Search for the Best Value

The Avengers will be the superhero film that lifts all other boats. Captain Marvel, who figures to be a central hero in Avengers, has been doing quite well on her own. And doubtless the release of Avengers will provide a bit of a boost. At $36 FML Bucks, she’s the fifth most expensive option (third most expensive film), and carries projections around $9 million. I think that gives value as a low-end option.

This Week’s Lineup

I believe in the Avengers, especially book-ending the weekend.
