Upcoming Releases, June 2019

We're in June, the heart of summer, and there are plenty of blockbusters coming our way.

Friday, June 7:
X-Men: Dark Phoenix:
This is the latest in the X-Men saga, and it is sort of a do-over to the story in "X-Men: The Last Stand." This one has the "First Class" cast and promises to take things in a thrilling new direction. It's been delayed a few times, but I still have high hopes.

Late Night: This comedy features Emma Thompson as a late night host and Mindy Kaling, who wrote the screenplay, as her first female comedy writer. Kaling has delivered some great material on "The Office" and "The Mindy Project," and I think this looks like a cinematic delight.

The Secret Life of Pets 2: This has been a big year for animated films, but we haven't had a big one since the Spring. This sequel is the first big animated domino of the summer, and will likely be a spot of fun. But it's not the biggest animated film of the month.

Friday, June 14:
Men in Black: International
: Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson take over the leading roles here, and their comedic chemistry in the trailer looks as strong as it was in "Thor: Ragnarok." This looks like a pretty fun and exciting summer blockbuster, one that breathes new life into the aging franchise.

The Dead Don't Die: This zombie comedy from Jim Jarmusch looks like a pretty fun take on the genre, starring Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny and Adam Driver, among others. This should expose the off-beat filmmaker to a wider audience.

Shaft: This focuses on three generations of crime fighters with the same name, as Samuel L. Jackon and Richard Roundtree have roles in this newest film iteration of the classic story.

Friday, June 21:
Toy Story 4:
The gang is back in this latest Pixar adventure that is sure to be one of the biggest films of the summer. It should be the biggest animated offering of the summer as well, and promises to be another emotional journey for audiences of all ages.

Child's Play: Chucky is back, whether we want him or not. Horror films are a staple of summer, and this re-make of the classic 1980s property is sure to bring some nostalgia, if nothing else.

Anna: In a world with special female assassins on the big screen, here's the latest one. This promises lots of action regardless of story or performances.

Friday, June 28:
Annabelle Comes Home:
This horror film out of the "Conjuring" universe focuses on the creepy doll and the supernatural evil hunters (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) who have to try and bring her to heel, again.

Yesterday: This musical comedy supposes that nobody remembers the Beatles, except for one singer/songwriter who is able to cash in on his extensive knowledge of their catalog to build a career and following for himself. It looks like a fun idea and one that will feature some iconic music.
