2019 Broncos' Season, Secondary
The NFL Draft is over, and free agency has slowed to a trickle. As we look toward Training Camp and a new season, I'll be looking at the position groups as they stand. Today, it's time to consider the Secondary.
Secondary:
Cornerbacks: Chris Harris, Jr., Bryce Callahan, Isaac Yiadom, De'Vante Busby, Brendan Langley, Trey Johnson, Linden Stephens, Alijah Holder, Horace Richardson
Safeties: Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson, Will Parks, Su'a Cravens, Dymonte Thomas, Shamarko Thomas, Trey Marshall, Jamaal Carter
Roster Group: Things could be much worse here today. In fact, it looked worse a month ago, and even a few months before that. This is a unit where the Broncos have done a lot of work this off-season, including reaching a new contract deal with Harris to keep him in Denver at least one more season. With that and the additions of Callahan and Jackson, as well as fliers like Busby, this could be one of the sneaky great units for the Broncos. The team still has Simmons and Parks, young safeties they've been grooming, and I'm excited to see year two from Yiadom, especially working with this coaching staff. This is a group where the Broncos could keep as many as 10, but will likely keep at least nine. A wild card here is Langley, who has been working to convert to a receiver, too. It will also be interesting to see where Jackson slots. On the roster he's currently listed as a safety, but he can play corner, and did for the Texans. That gives the Broncos quite a bit of flexibility. And Callahan is a great add, coming in from the Bears and giving the Broncos someone familiar with the scheme they'll be playing. It will also be interesting to see who steps up and who steps forward with the corners on the roster. It feels like Harris, Callahan and Yiadom are locked into spots. I think Langley is likely a Practice Squad at best, and I have hopes for the AAF prospect Busby, despite his rough start. Still it will be interesting to see who steps up in Camp and Pre-Season.
Unit Projection: Right now I'm playing it safe and going with nine on the final roster. Those nine, for me right now, are Harris, Callahan, Yiadom, Jackson, Parks, Simmons, Cravens, Shamarko Thomas, and Busby.
