1999 Rewind: For Love of the Game


It's been 20 years since 1999, a year with a number of extraordinary and engaging films. During this summer, I'll be looking back at 10 of my favorites from 1999 for those looking to catch up with a few good films. Check back Mondays this summer for more from 1999.

For Love of the Game (September 17, 1999)
Starring: Kevin Costner, Kelly Preston, John C. Reilly, and Jena Malone
About: It's July and the heart of baseball season. It's also the All Star Break, meaning there aren't any games for a few days, so it's a good time for Baseball movies. And when it comes to Baseball movies, Kevin Costner is the king. In 1999, he released "For Love of the Game," a fascinating film based on a short novel from Michael Sharra, that takes place in the form of flashbacks during a Perfect Game. Costner plays an aging pitcher who is having the game of his life, but he's also contemplating said life and his career as he's been asked to hang it up. I like the pacing and performances, and a lot about this film. Costner is very good. I've also read the book, so this is a story that really resonated with me. While there is plenty of competition for a top spot, this is one of my favorite baseball movies ever.
Rating: PG-13 for brief strong language and some sexuality.

  It was an interesting week for new releases in theaters. Below is my take on the two big theatrical films from the weekend. Fall TV Roundup, Week 16

  It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.
