Upcoming Releases—September 2019

Summer has come and gone, and Fall is upon us. At the movies, that means a change of season. August brought a flood of new releases, mostly not memorable or worth checking out but dumped in the Dog Days of Summer. September offers fewer releases, and starts to turn the corner toward more meaningful films. We're not totally there yet, but the time is coming.

Friday, September 6:
IT Chapter 2
—When the first IT was released, it was a huge Box Office event, one that stretched for months. I expect much the same here as Stephen King's classic tale concludes.

Satanic Panic—Look, they can't all be winners. This one is about a pizza girl who encounters a group of satanists looking for a virgin sacrifice. This "comedy" looks like one you can safely miss at theaters.

Friday, September 13:
Hustlers
—This one boasts a great cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu and Cardi B, and features an interesting story about a group of strippers who turn the tables on some wealthy clients to their benefit.

The Goldfinch—Based on the novel, Ansel Elgort stars as a young man who lost his mother and goes on a lifelong journey of grief and discovery.

Friday, September 20:
Ad Astra
—This space film stars Brad Pitt as a soldier sent to clean up a mission gone bad and led by his father (Tommy Lee Jones). It has a good cast and buzz, and will likely be one of the month's bigger films.

Downton Abbey—This movie picks up after the events of the series and returns all the familiar characters as they prepare to host the King and Queen of England. This should be a fun return to a great series.

The Wedding Year—A young couple (Sarah Hyland and Tyler James Williams) set out on a series of adventures in this romantic comedy. There will be weddings.

Rambo: Last Blood—Sylvester Stallone's titular hero is back, kicking butt and taking names in one final (maybe) adventure.

Running With the Devil—Nicolas Cage and Laurence Fishburne are a pair of employees tasked with figuring out where the supply chain is breaking down for a drug cartel in this action film.

Zeroville—This latest from James Franco stars him as a 1970s film fanatic trying to make it in the business and features a host of familiar faces including Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell.

Friday, September 27:
Abominable
—Finally, one for the kids. On this final weekend in September, we get our first and only animated feature of the month, one featuring a Yeti and an adventure.

The Day Shall Come—This drama features Anna Kendrick but is going under-the-radar so far.
