Upcoming Releases: February, 2020

We're into the second month of the year, and some of the anticipated films are starting to roll out. That doesn't mean they're all winners, though. Here's a look at the new movies coming in February.

Friday, February 7:
Birds of Prey (and the Fabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn):
Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was just about the best thing in "Suicide Squad." She was good enough I thought she should be considered for the Academy Awards, and I also thought she would do well leading her own movie. Now she'll get the chance with "Birds of Prey," which returns us to the world of D.C. movies for the first time in a couple years. It looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Horse Girl (Netflix): This new Netflix film stars Alison Brie as an awkward woman with an affinity for crafts and horses finds her dreams spilling out into her life. This is billed as something for a supernatural thriller.

Wednesday, February 12:
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (Netflix):
This is a sequel to a popular teen romance that aired in 2019 on Netflix. This one has its released timed just before Valentine's Day.

Friday, February 14:
Fantasy Island:
This shares a name with the classic show, but this one aims to be more of a horror story. This is just the kind of romantic film you're looking for on Valentine's Day Weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog: This is a film based on the classic Sega video game, and likely will aim to provide nostalgia for adults and laughs for kids. James Marsden and Jim Carrey star in the film, and it looks dubious to me. It was also plagued by criticism of Sonic in the early going. We shall see.

The Photograph: This romance stars Lakeith Stanfield and Issa Rae. It looks like an engaging and intriguing kind of story, and seems ideally suited to the holiday weekend vibe.

Downhill: After barely escaping an avalanche, a family is thrown into disarray. This comedy stars Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Will Farrell. That's a strong comedy pairing, and one that ought to be interesting to watch.

Friday, February 21:
Call of  the Wild:
This new film stars Harrison Ford in the title roll taking on Jack London's classic tale. The trailer looks thrilling and this should have plenty of heart, though I am disappointed the dog looks obviously CGI-created in the trailer.

Emma: Anya Taylor-Joy takes the lead in a new version of the Jane Austen comedy. The trailer is wacky and there's a built in audience for this that will likely be thrilled by the new film.

Friday, February 28:
The Invisible Man:
This new thriller focuses on Elisabeth Moss as a battered wife who escapes her abuser only to learn later he has passed away. She is set to inherit everything, but she has to pass a competency test. That's when things start happening, and she begins to suspect she's caught in another one of his schemes to hurt her. We've seen takes on this type of tale before, and doubtless this will be full of suspense. Moss is a gifted actress, so I'm curious to see what she does here.
