Fantasy Movie League: Sonic faces an Invisible threat

February has been an interesting month. Last week Sonic figured to sit atop the Box Office, and it did. But Call of the Wild outpaced projections and turned out to be the Best Value. Now this week we get The Invisible Man in the mix, and it will again be a challenge to find value and program the right upside. But more on that in a bit.

Last week I thought Birds of Prey would be strong enough as an anchor and that Brahams: The Boy II, despite being a movie I had no interest in, would be a potential value. So I loaded up. And Brahms did do well versus it’s projections, coming in second behind Call of the Wild. But, naturally, I missed by quite a bit because of the bonuses. Not my best work.

Let’s hope this week is better. There are three new films in the game, and one is even projected to top the Box Office as February ends. Let’s find the winning combination. As always, if you think you’re better at the game than me, I encourage you to join me in a Fantasy Life App Blog league! You can join the league here. On to this week’s competition.

New at the Box Office:

The top entry at the Box Office is The Invisible Man, which stars Elisabeth Moss and looks to be something of a horror thriller. However, it’s gotten plenty of love from critics, currently sitting at 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. At $501 FML Bucks, it’s the most expensive in the game, but it’s also projected the highest. Fantasy Movie League projects $33.8 million, while Box Office Pro projects $30 million and Box Office Report projects $28 million. That means it’s a question as to whether the film can return value, even in the top spot.
Next up is My Hero Academia, which I will freely admit I have no idea about. It’s got an 88 percent critical score, and seemingly has a hard core audience that isn’t me. It is $137 FML Bucks, and projected at $3 million. Box Office Report projects $3.3 million, and Box Office Pro doesn’t even have it in the Top 10. Someone is right, and someone is wrong. You have to bet on which one that is when programming your Cineplex.
The final new entry is Emma, the take on Jane Austen’s story that’s been told many times before. It’s just $32 FML Bucks and boasts a decent 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But it’s a real limited release. Fantasy Movie League sees $1.5 million, but they’re the only site to offer a projection. This is a low-end dart throw.

The Search for the Best Value:

Last week Call of the Wild wasn’t the top film at the Box Office, but it was the most profitable versus cost and projections. This week it’s $251 FML Bucks, and projected in third at $14.5 million. Box Office Pro has it at $14.7 million and Box Office Pro sees $14.8 million. But Sonic is only $289 FML Bucks, and it’s projected higher by similar margins. Fantasy Movie League sees $14.9, but Box Office Pro sees $17.3 million and Box Office Report sees $15.5 million. That could make Sonic a better choice as anchor and value.

This Week’s Lineup:

It’s a middling field, and as such you need to maximize bucks. That means playing The Invisible Man.

The Invisible Man
The Call of the Wild
Bad Boys For Life x3
Dolittle
Knives Out x2
