Best of the Decade, No. 10

Over the next 25 weeks I'll be rolling out my favorite films of the last decade. This is, as all lists of this kind, personal selections. Agree, disagree, make a comment and share your thoughts!

No. 10 The Hunger Games (2012)
Starring:
Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland
Director: Gary Ross
Academy Award Nominations: 0
Academy Award Wins: 0
About: We've reached my Top 10 for the last 10 years, and it begins with "The Hunger Games." I remember when this film came out. I hadn't read the books, but I was curious about the story, which made a star of Lawrence, who had quite a decade. This entire series ran in the last decade, with the final film in the series, "Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2" being released in 2015. I felt the series diminished a bit as it went along. I wasn't taken with the final two films or the ending. However, for me, the power was in the idea and the first film. It's ironic, given what is happening in our country now, that this film comes up for me in this countdown. I thought that the story, which was crafted by Suzanne Collins in her novels, presented some dangerous warnings about the possible trajectory of our country that we're seeing play out to some degree in 2020. The acting is quite good, as is the production and direction from Ross. I loved Lawrence in the lead role, and I really loved the thought exercise presented by the first film. Again, while I didn't love the way the series played out, this single film is one I come back to time-and-again. It was one of the most impactful I saw in the last decade, and it was an easy call to place it on this list and in the Top 10 I'll remember from the 2010s.
Rating:  PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images - all involving teens.
