2020 Broncos' Season, Franchise Tag Deadline
Wednesday was the deadline for those with a Franchise Tag to get a long-term deal. For the Broncos, that meant the deadline for a long-term deal with Safety Justin Simmons.
Simmons is one of the best young safeties in the game. Last season he had 93 tackles, including 65 solo tackles, four interceptions and 15 passes defensed. That was part of the reason the Broncos decided to Franchise Tag Simmons, and they did offer him a long-term deal. But the player and team couldn't agree on terms and Simmons passed on the deal, and will play on the tag. This feels like a tough and risky proposition for the Broncos.
The team can tag Simmons again next year, and might well do that. They could also work on a long-term offer to make at the end of the season that might get them closer. Simmons is betting on himself, and likely is looking for long-term security that reflects he's one of the best safeties in the game. It would be a huge disappointment to think of the Broncos losing out on Simmons and seeing him in another uniform. But it will be interesting to see how this season plays out.
Simmons wasn't the only one on a tag not to get a long-term deal. In fact, of the 14 players to receive the Franchise Tag only two received long-term deals. Chris Jones and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year deal on Tuesday, and Derrick Henry agreed to a four-year deal with the Titans on Wednesday just as the deadline hit.
In addition to Simmons, a number of high-profile players will be playing on the tag. This includes Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Dak Prescott, Bengals receiver A.J. Green, Chargers tight end Hunter Henry, Buccaneers' lineback Shaq Barrett and Arizona Cardinals running back Kenyan Drake. Meanwhile the Jaguars and their top defensive lineman Yannick Ngakoue remain at odds, and it's unclear if he'll even sign his franchise tender.
For the Broncos, Simmons has signed his Franchise Tag offer and plans to play. He figures to be among the best in the league at his position again, and we'll have to wait until next off-season to see if he'll be a Bronco long-term.
