Summer Movie Preview

It's nearly summer and things are starting to open back up. That includes theaters, where we're starting to see movies as normal. I love summer movies, seeing the blockbusters and the fun of summer at the movies. So, I've looked ahead to the films slated for release between Memorial Day Weekend and August. Below are some of the highlights in chronological order.

A Quiet Place II (May 28): This sequel to the original picks up where things left off. This was one of the first films that was supposed to release when the pandemic hit in 2020 that was pushed. It finally lands on Memorial Day Weekend to kick-start the summer. Emily Blunt is back and John Krasinski is back at the helm directing.

In The Heights (June 11): This musical is an adaptation of the stage play from Lin-Manuel Miranda. It looks to have a good cast and has some good reviews so far. I'm excited to see this one, which drops in theaters and on HBO Max that same day.

F9 (June 25): The ninth installment in the Fast & Furious Franchise sees Dom (Vin Diesel) square off against his brother (John Cena). This one was another film delayed, but it's finally set to take off in June, which should make for an action-packed launch into summer.

Black Widow (July 9): Another film that has been oft delayed thanks to the pandemic, Black Widow is the first solo tale for Scarlett Johansson's character. It looks good and it will be the beginning of a huge second half of 2021 for Marvel films after none were released in 2020. This was supposed to kick off summer in early May, but let's hope we finally get it this July.

Space Jam: A New Legacy (July 16): This is another one that will be in theaters and on HBO Max the same day. It's the long gestating follow up to the original film that showcased Michael Jordan in his prime with the Looney Tunes. Now we get LeBron James and some pretty exciting looking graphics. I'm interested to see how this goes.

Jungle Cruise (July 30): Disney has had some success in adapting theme park rides into films. This one features Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in the lead roles and looks like a bit of fun. This one should also be good for the family.

The Suicide Squad (August 6): A final summer film that will be in theaters and on HBO Max, this one adds to the extended D.C. Universe. This time they've tapped James Gunn, who gave us Guardians of the Galaxy, to bring this group to life. The trailer was pretty impressive and I'm hopeful this will jumpstart the D.C. universe again in a good way.
