Upcoming Releases, July 2021

Last month we saw a traditional summer movie schedule begin to return. In July, it's back in earnest. It's a great time to dive into the movies! Here's what's coming.

Thursday, July 1:
Audible
: This Netflix release follows Maryland School for the Deaf high school athlete Amaree McKenstry and his close friends as they face the pressures of senior year and grappling with the realities of venturing off into the hearing world. This one has football and should hit you right in the feels.

No Sudden Move: This 1955 in Detroit-set film from Steven Soderbergh debuts exclusively on HBO Max. The cast includes Jon Hamm, and it looks like an interesting watch for the long holiday weekend.

Friday, July 2:
The Forever Purge
: This one promises to flip the format of the now-tiresome horror franchise. Doubtless this will have some points to make about class disparity in addition to copious violence. Happy Fourth of July everybody.

Boss Baby: Family Business: This animated sequel picks up the story. It debuts in theaters and at home on Peacock, providing a family-friendly option for the holiday weekend.

Summer of Soul: This documentary from Questlove focuses on Woodstock and was a hit when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Now it drops in theaters and on Hulu the same day.

The Tomorrow War: This sci-fi action film drops for the holiday weekend on Amazon Prime. The cast includes Chris Pratt and J.K. Simmons, and this one promises to provide a little bit of a jolt to viewers looking for an action adventure.

Fear Street, Part 1: 1994: This three-part film series for Netflix releases on consecutive weeks and presents an inter-connected set of horror stories based on the R.L. Stine books. The first part, set in 1994, drops for Fourth of July Weekend.

Friday, July 9:
Black Widow
: Oft delayed, this Marvel film becomes the first to release since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. This one is really a prequel of sorts, with the action taking place in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War. This figures to be one of the best theatrical events of the summer.

How I Became a Superhero: This new Netflix film centers on a lone wolf cop who tracks down and seeks to dismantle a nefarious organization dealing in super powers. This feels like a bit of a stretch.

Fear Street, Part 2: 1978: The three-part series on Netflix continues with another film based on the R.L. Stine series. This one features dark dealings at a summer camp during 1978.

Wednesday, July 14:
Gunpowder Milkshake
: This action film from Netflix stars Karen Gillan as a girl who, at 12, was orphaned and raised by The Firm, a ruthless crime syndicate. Now, she's a full-fledged operative with the group. Honestly, they had me at Karen Gillan.

Friday, July 16:
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions
: This sequel to the original horror film Escape Room finds the survivors fighting to survive again...

Space Jam: A New Legacy: This new Space Jam finds LeBron James playing alongside the Looney Tunes team as he tries to save his own son. This one drops in theaters and on HBO Max.

Fear Street, Part 3: 1666: This third and final installment of the film series based on the R.L. Stine books drops the action way back into 1666.

Wednesday, July 21:
Troll Hunters: Rise of the Titans
: This animated features continues the series and world brought to Netflix by Guillermo del Toro.

Friday, July 23:
Old
: This new M. Night Shymalan film is set at a beach. It's a magical beach where people come but can never leave because of some rapid aging. I hear it's set in Florida.

Snake Eyes: Henry Golding takes the lead in this origin story for one of the iconic G.I. Joe characters. Maybe this is leading to another G.I. Joe film...

The Last Letter From Your Lover: This Netflix film features two interwoven stories, one set in 1965 and one in the present. The cast features Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley, among other.

Jolt: This Amazon film centers on a bouncer who goes on a rampage to find her boyfriend's killer. The cast includes Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale and Susan Sarandon.

Saturday, July 24:
Blood Red Sky:
This Netflix thriller finds a woman with a mysterious illness thrust into action when terrorists hijack her plane. This Saturday offering will be an alternative to night one of Olympic competition.

Thursday, July 29:
Resort to Love
: This Netflix film centers on an aspiring musician who becomes the entertainment at her ex-fiance's wedding. Christian Millian and Alicia Keys are part of the cast here.

Friday, July 30:
The Jungle Cruise
: After being delayed by the pandemic, we finally get the live action adaptation of this popular Disneyland attraction. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt head the cast in a film that looks like a lot of fun.

Stillwater: Matt Damon plays an oil worker from Oklahoma who travels to Europe to try and free his daughter, who has been falsely accused of murder. This feels like a more serious film getting a jump on the competition by dropping during Summer.

The Green Knight: Filmmaker David Lowery directs this new take on the Arthurian legend following the reckless and headstrong nephew of King Arthur. This one features Joel Edgerton and Alicia Vikander in the cast.
