Favorite Broncos of All Time, WRs
Last off-season I ticked down my favorite Broncos of All Time. This off-season, to pass the weeks until we get football, I'm going to be sharing my Top 5 at each position, plus an Honorable Mention. Today I continue with wide receivers.
1. Rod Smith (1995-2006)
Stats: 849 receptions, 11,389 yards, 68 TDs
About: Smith is easily the greatest receiver in Broncos' history, and my favorite. He was an undrafted player that rose to be the best, the top receiver on back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams. I hope at some point he makes it to the Hall of Fame.
2. Demaryius Thomas (2010-2018)
Stats: 665 receptions, 9,055 yards, 60 TDs
About: Thomas was a great Bronco. He is one of the most iconic moments, catching the pass from Tim Tebow that led to a touchdown in a playoff win over the Steelers. He was also the team's top receiver during the Super Bowl 50 season. I loved watching him play and was heart-broken when he was traded. He was a great one.
3. Brandon Marshall (2006-2009)
Stats: 327 Receptions, 4,019 yards, 25 TDs
About: Marshall was probably the most prolific receiver we had during our least successful stretch between Super Bowls. He caught 100-plus passes in three straight seasons, for Mike Shanahan and with Jay Cutler, and for Josh McDaniels, with Kyle Orton. His time with Denver ended too quickly, but I will always love Marshall the player.
4. Ed McCaffrey (1995-2003)
Stats: 462 receptions, 6,200 yards, 46 TDs
About: McCaffrey didn't begin his career in Denver, but he ended it here. He was the receiver opposite Smith during the latter days of Elway's career, and there was a time when the Broncos' had the two best receivers in the league. I still love hearing him talk football on the radio and will always appreciate his great contributions to the Broncos.
5. Emmanuel Sanders (2014-2019)
Stats: 404 receptions, 5,361 yards, 28 TDs
About: Sanders had plenty of flash and personality, and was a lot of fun to watch. He was DT's running mate, and they were a great pair to watch. Sanders contributed greatly to the Peyton Manning era, and was a big part of our Super Bowl run.
Honorable Mention: Brandon Lloyd (2009-2011)
Stats: 104 receptions, 1,848 yards, 11 TDs
About: Lloyd was a journeyman receiver who made a stop in Denver during a tough period. He ended up becoming the man to replace Brandon Marshall, which is no easy task. And yet, during a difficult and lost 2010 season, he managed to see 153 targets, catching 77 passes for a league-leading 1,448 yards and 11 TDs. He was an under-rated contributor that proved a bridge between eras, leaving Denver just before Manning arrived and the era of big air took off. Still, he made some of those rough years more fun.
