2021 Broncos' Season, Pre-Season Expectations
The Broncos' first pre-season game is on Saturday in Minnesota. It's the first time in a few months we'll get to see the team play and get to see how some of these competitions are shaking out. Today, I thought I'd look at a couple of the roster questions that I'd like to see play out in Week 1.
Quarterback Battle: This is THE story of Training Camp. Will it be Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater? Daily camp reports have been a mixed bag, but it's the games that will be a deciding factor. Drew starts Saturday in Minnesota, Teddy gets the start in game two. Let's see how they play on the field and who can step up and seize this job.
Royce Freeman: Freeman was once a Third Round pick that was set to be the future for the Broncos. Now, he's supposedly the fourth man on the RB depth chart and squarely on the roster bubble. These few weeks of pre-season games will likely prove vital to him making his case for Denver, or another squad. So, I'm interested to see what he's got.
Young WRs: The Broncos have Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy locked into top spots, and Tim Patrick and K.J. Hamler seem set, too. But who else makes the team? Diontae Spencer is fighting for a spot, but so, too, are a gaggle of youngsters including Seth Williams, Tyrie Cleveland, Kendall Hinton and Trinity Benson. Only a couple can make the team and I'm excited to see who makes a pre-season splash.
Cornerback Depth: The Broncos are LOADED at corner. The team has Kyle Fuller, Bryce Callahan, Ronald Darby, Patrick Surtain II, Essang Bassey, Michael Ojemudia and Kary Vincent, Jr., among others. I'm excited to see them play and sad at the prospect they can't all make the team.
Young Safeties: Trey Marshall is the veteran looking to win a spot, while Caden Sterns and Jamar Johnson are the rookies that the Broncos seems to love. They can't all make the roster, so these games should tell the tale.
The Broncos battle the Vikings on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST. The game will be carried live on NFL Network.
