Fall TV Preview: Most Anticipated Network Premiers
The New Fall Season begins on Monday. Last week I looked at some of the big cable premiers coming our way. Today, I'm going to look at five new Network Premiers I'm excited to check out. Shows appear in release order!
The Big Leap, Mondays at 9 p.m. on FOX
Premiers: Monday, September 20
About: This one is a scripted series focusing on a group of adults who need a second chance. They hope to find that auditioning for a reality show in Detroit that will craft a group of 20 people into a troupe to put on a performance of the ballet Swan Lake. The first two episodes are available now on Hulu and I thought the series was great, and a lot of fun. I like the premise and the potential. It's in a tough time slot on a tough night but it's well worth making a point to find this one, which features a cast led by Scott Foley, Teri Polo and Piper Perabo.
The Wonder Years, Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC
Premiers: Wednesday, September 22
About: This is a re-boot of the original, this time set in Alabama in the 1960s and focused on an African-American family. Doubtless this will explore a different perspective with different issues that will resonate with families today. Don Cheadle serves as the narrator, while Dule Hill fills the role of the patriarch of the family. I loved the original series and I'm really looking forward to this re-boot. We don't have many sitcoms on Network TV in 2021, so I'm hoping the new ones we get are good and lasting.
La Brea, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC
Premiers: Tuesday, September 28
About: This might end up being ridiculous. It's about a sink hole that opens in Southern California, depositing people, places and things in a pre-historic world below. As they fight to survive their new surroundings, those left on the surface try to figure out what happened and mount a rescue. This is a high concept swing and one that doesn't leave a lot of margin for error. But I like the different approach and the teasers we've seen. I'm pushing my chips in and hoping we get something fun here.
CSI: Vegas, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on CBS
Premiers: Wednesday, October 6
About: I remember when CSI debuted in 2000. It fast became one of the most popular shows on TV and spawned three different spin-offs. None have been on the air in recent years, and the original series has been off the air for a while. But it's back, more than 20 years later, looking at how the job and technology has changed. Also back are some of the original cast members, including William Peterson and Jorja Fox. I'm kind of pumped to see what it's like in its return.
4400, Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW
Premiers: Monday, October 25
About: The CW doesn't have many new shows this Fall, but they went in on 4400, a re-make of a series that aired on USA from 2004-2007. The network is trying to broaden its identity as the Arrowverse begins to wane and those series begin to end. Last year they had success with Walker, a re-boot of another classic TV property. One of the producers behind that re-boot worked on 4400, which finds 4,400 people taken at various points in history and suddenly all deposited in 2021. How do they move on with their lives? Where did they go? That's part of the adventure here.
