Best Picture Nominees: The Power of the Dog
On February 8 the Academy Award nominations were announced and 10 films were nominated for Best Picture. On March 27, the winners will be announced. Between now and then, I'll be looking at each of the nominees and considering their chances.

About: And we end this look at Best Picture nominees with the most nominated film, The Power of the Dog. It's a beautifully shot film, one that captured many audiences, but not all. It's not an easy or light story from Campion, centered on two brothers in Montana in the 1920s. It garnered nominations for its four primary actors, which is an impressive haul. Despite that, I don't think any is a favorite in their category and I would be surprised if any of the four ends up taking the Academy Award. The film also earned nods for direction and adapted screenplay. It could win either, but that sort of depends. I think CODA is more of a favorite in screenplay, and I personally think Kenneth Branagh wins for Belfast in direction, leaving The Power of the Dog to claim Best Picture. I also think the film will do well in technical categories. I think it stands an excellent chance of winning for Cinematography and Original Score. It could win in editing, production design and sound, though that feels like more of a long shot. At the end of the day, I expect the film to win several awards, likely including Best Picture.
Rating: Rated R for brief sexual content/full nudity.
Verdict: Three and a half stars out of five
Where to Find It: The film is in limited theatrical release but is available to stream on Netflix.
