Upcoming Releases: July 2022

We're in the midst of summer now. July is a month that usually features a number of exciting and interesting blockbuster features, and this July is no different. Let's check out what's coming.

Friday, July 1:
Minions: The Rise of Gru (Theaters):
Set in the 1970s, this Minions feature focuses on a young Gru (Steve Carrell) and his rise to power. It looks to be a slice of fun, family entertainment.

The Princess (Hulu): This one hasn't had much of a marketing campaign, but features Joey King is the lead role as a princess who is more of a warrior and must save her kingdom.

Wednesday, July 6:
Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between (Netflix):
This is a romance of sorts, following a couple who agreed to break up as college is ending. On the day they're to part, the gather to re-live and celebrate the key moments and locations of their relationship. This sounds like an interesting concept that could be a fun summer watch.

Friday, July 8:
Thor: Love and Thunder (Theaters):
This is the next big release from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this one featuring the return of Natalie Portman as Jane. It looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

The Sea Beast (Netflix): This one focuses on an era when beasts roam the seas and monster hunters are revered. On a quest, a famous captain is saddled with a young stowaway. This one is led by Dan Stevens and seems like more family-oriented fare.

Friday, July 15:
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (Theaters):
This animated comedy looks like it's aimed at families and seeks to draw out laughs. I enjoyed the trailer and have hope that the film itself will be a bit of summer fun.

Where the Crawdads Sing (Theaters): Daisy Edgar-Jones takes the lead here in a film based on the novel and produced by Reese Witherspoon. Edgar-Jones is a great performer and I'm excited to see her in another interesting role here in 2022.

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (Theaters): Lesley Manville stars as a widow who works as a cleaner and saves up to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Paris. There, things break her way. This one looks like a bit of fun counter-programming for the summer.

Persuasion (Netflix): A modern day romance starring Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding. It's been a big year for Johnson, and that continues with what figures to be a popular streaming film.

Don't Make Me Go (Amazon Prime): John Cho stars as a single father who gets a terminal diagnosis and tries to cram in as many milestones as possible with his teen daughter. Expect plenty of tears with this one.

1UP (Amazon Prime): This one is described as an eSports gaming comedy, starring Ruby Rose. I don't know what to think.

Friday, July 22:
Nope (Theaters)
: The latest from Jordan Peele is another modern horror, this time with a sci-fi twist. The trailer is stylish and the cast is strong. This figures to be a fun time at the movies.

The Gray Man (Netflix): This thriller sees Ryan Gosling as a skilled CIA mercenary. This one has a strong cast and figures to be a high-profile release for Netflix in its never-ending quest to be a go to for all things film.

Thursday, July 28:
House Party (HBO Max):
A re-make of the classic about a couple of friends who decide to throw a party when their parents are away. This one comes from LeBron James, so there's that.

Friday, July 29:
Vengeance (Theaters):
This darkly comic thriller features Issa Rae. It figures to be a fun and engaging time at the movies.

D.C.'s League of Super Pets (Theaters): This animated comedy features the Justice League, but it puts the focus on their pets. It features the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Keanu Reeves, among others. It looks like a late-summer gem.

Purple Hearts (Netflix): A film about a struggling singer who marries a Marine for the benefits and gets more than she bargained for. This offers a little late summer romance and pathos for the streaming crowd.
