Favorite Films of All Time, No. 20

 


In 2022 I'm revisiting my favorite films of all time, doing a countdown of the Top 50 throughout the year. About: A world where there are no babies. A world fractured. A world without hope. I remember the first time I saw Children of Men. I was blown away by the vision and production from Cuaron. I was also moved by the story. In a world where hope is fading, a man who is lost and feels purposeless is given both hope and purpose by being witness and guardian to a miracle: a pregnant woman. There is a lot about the story that I enjoy. There is also a lot about the direction and production that I enjoy. But, mostly, I love the story and the way it challenges me. It is a beautiful production, one that touches on themes of hope and faith. I love the performances, especially the work of Owen. I thought it was a film that was largely overlooked when it was released, and it continues to be a fascinating and engrossing film that not enough people talk about. That's a big part of why it's on this list.

  It was an interesting week for new releases in theaters. Below is my take on the two big theatrical films from the weekend.   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.   It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?
