2022 Broncos' Season, Week 5
Week 5: Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 9
Season Record: 2-3 (2-1 Home)
Key Play: In overtime, facing Fourth and 1 inside the five yard line and trailing 12-9, the Broncos elected to go for it. Russell Wilson's pass to Courtland Sutton was broken up, ending the game.
Recap: Thursday's game wasn't good. The Broncos' defense, as has been its practice, continued to shine. The team recorded six sacks and forced two turnovers. They held the Colts to nine points in regulation and 12 points total. And yet, the Broncos lost, again. This was the first home loss and it's a game the team should have won. The Broncos led 9-6 late in the game and were driving. But Wilson threw a second interception of his own, opening the door. A game that saw a number of injuries hurt the Broncos' defense, which surrendered the tying field goal, then gave up a field goal on the first drive of overtime. The team was gassed and missing players. The offense answered and could have tied. Nathaniel Hackett went for the win. Wilson missed a wide open receiver. The pass hit the ground and the Broncos slumped to 2-3 on the season. It's true, the Broncos were 2-3 after five games with Peyton Manning in his first season. It's true there was cause for concern then but the Broncos rallied. Can they do it again? That road is getting harder, especially with injuries. Tim Patrick and Javonte Williams had already been lost for the season. Randy Gregory is on IR, at least for a time. Now Garrett Bolles is out for the year with a broken leg and Ronald Darby joins the list of those with a torn ACL. He's out for the year, too. That leaves the Broncos thin on the offensive line and on defense. All those are challenges the team will have to overcome as they await their next game, another Prime Time battle, this time on Monday night against the Chargers. Hackett needs to get better. Wilson needs to get better. And the clock is ticking.
Game Balls:
* Bradley Chubb. Chubb recorded two and a half sacks, continuing his torrid pace in 2022.
* Baron Browning. Filling in for Gregory, Browning looked great, putting on pressures and grabbing a sack before leaving with a wrist ailment.
* Caden Sterns. We miss Justin Simmons, but Sterns is doing well. He snagged two interceptions on Thursday, nearly saving the game.
Lingering Concerns:
* The Offense. It's been five games and we're not seeing progress. Losing a left tackle won't help. The running game isn't consistent, and the passing game is a mess. Hackett and Wilson aren't on the same page and it's time to get better or the Broncos are going no where.
