Favorite Superhero Films, No. 48

Throughout 2023 I'll be sharing my favorite Superhero Films each Saturday, counting down from 50 to 1. Check back each week throughout the year for the next installment. Agree? Disagree? What to share a favorite? Post it in the comments.

Thena: I asked Gilgamesh once why he chose to protect me. He said, "When you love something, you protect it. It is the most natural thing in the world."

Eternals (2021)
Starring
: Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Barry Keoghan, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Ma Dong-Seok, and Kit Harrington
Director: Chloe Zhao
About: After a lost year due to the pandemic, Marvel released four films in 2021. One of the most ambitious and most polarizing was Eternals. The film looks at a fringe group of heroes in the MCU. It has a dense mythology that requires plenty of backstory. And it's still unclear exactly how it fits into the larger picture of the MCU. Some didn't care for the film, which runs more than two and a half hours. I understand the complaints and how it failed to land with some audiences, but I just don't agree. Zhao is a talented visual storyteller. I loved her work on Nomadland, which had won Best Picture and Best Director months earlier. This film has a big, ambitious scope. And yet, it feels personal. I was drawn to these characters, their world and their struggle. It's the story of an unconventional family that comes together to safeguard a world they've come to love. There is some humor, some great action sequences, some incredibly well imagined historical sequences and a powerful third act. It may not have worked for some people, but it worked well for me.
