Upcoming Releases, February 2023
After a quiet January, things really get rolling in February, a month whose releases include the first big blockbuster of the year.
Friday, February 3:
* Knock At the Cabin (Theaters): Hailing from M. Night Shymalan, this is another mysterious thriller. It boasts a high-profile cast and after an ominous teaser trailer, it's clear this one will force its characters to make a terrible choice. It looks potentially engaging.
* 80 For Brady (Theaters): Tom Brady won't be in the Super Bowl this year, but he's still got a presence in February in this comedy, based on a true story, about four friends (Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin), who head to the Super Bowl to see their favorite quarterback, Brady, and the Patriots. It looks like a lot of fun.
* True Spirit (Netflix): This one is based on a true story about Jessica Watson, the youngest person to ever sail around the world. The cast features Cliff Curtis and Anna Paquin. It looks engaging.
Friday, February 10:
* Magic Mike's Last Dance (Theaters): Channing Tatum is back in the third film set in this Stripperverse. Like the others, I suspect it will have a specific appeal.
* Somebody I Used to Know (Prime Video): Alison Brie stars in this comedy about a workaholic who meets a woman that reminds her of a younger, more free self. This looks like an interesting release from Prime Video, which is becoming a solid content producer.
* Your Place or Mine (Netflix): This romantic comedy stars Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon as lifelong best friends who help each other out and maybe fall in love in the process. Ah, the Valentine's weekend movies.
* Sharper (Apple TV+): Julianne Moore plays a con artist in this new drama. Apple has a great track record with interesting films and I'm intrigued by this one.
Wednesday, February 15:
* Marlowe (Theaters): This new feature sees Liam Neeson slip into the shoes of the classic detective Phillip Marlowe in a new film from Neil Jordan. The trailer is intriguing and I like a good hard-boiled detective drama. This looks good.
Friday, February 17:
* Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: This is the first big blockbuster of the year, and the latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I love the trailer and I loved Jonathan Majors as Kang. I think this looks like a hit.
Friday, February 24:
* Jesus Revolution: This faith-based film tells the true story of a young Greg Laurie and the religious explosion at the church of Pastor Chuck Smith in the 1970s. It looks engaging and like a lot of fun, with a cast led by Kelsey Grammer, a great addition for the start of the Lenten season.
* Cocaine Bear: A bear gets into some cocaine and wreaks havoc. It's a simple premise with a cool cast directed by Elizabeth Banks. Count me in.
* We Have a Ghost (Netflix): This films comes from Christopher W. Landon, who gave us Happy Death Day, focusing on a family who discovers a ghost. When digging into the ghost's past, they become CIA targets. The cast includes Anthony Mackie and David Harbour. It's an interesting concept that could be fun.
