Upcoming Releases, September 2023
We've made it through Summer and we're turning toward the Fall. September is a mix of throwaway films and some more prestige films.
Friday, September 1:
* Bottoms (Theaters): Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri star as a pair of lesbians who start a fight club of sorts at their high school in order to meet women. The trailer is hilarious and this could be a fun late summer comedy.
* Equalizer 3 (Theaters): The third, and perhaps last, installment in the films series from director Antione Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington. Expect some more violence and action.
Wednesday, September 6:
* Scouts Honor: The Secret Files of the Boy Scouts (Netflix): Another documentary on the scandalous work of the Boy Scouts. This figures to be informative and depressing.
Friday, September 8:
* Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Theaters): From Eva Longoria, this film follows the friendship of two Mexican boys in the summer of 1987. It should be a fun coming of age film.
* My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (Theaters): The third installment in this franchise, so we know what to expect. This time they head to Greece and it should be plenty of fun.
* The Nun II (Theaters): The second installment of this horror franchise that is a spin-off from The Conjuring. This looks deeply unsettling, which might be the point.
* Poor Things (Theaters): It's a big week for new releases, including this film from Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone as a woman brought back to life. Expect some wacky action here.
*Sitting in Bars with Cake (Prime Video): A romantic comedy of sorts. This one also features Bette Middler. It offers a nice watch-at-home experience.
* Self Reliance (Hulu): This comedy features Andy Samberg in a send up of a horror concept. The cast includes Anna Kendrick and Jake Johnson, and it looks like some fun.
Friday, September 15:
* A Haunting in Venice (Theaters): The third feature film from Kenneth Branagh starring himself as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. The is set in post WWII Venice and features Kelly Reilly, Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey. I enjoy these films, so I'm excited.
* A Million Miles Away (Prime Video): Michael Pena takes the lead in this story of Michael Hernandez, the first migrant farm worker to travel to space. It looks fun and inspirational.
* El Conde (Netflix): This satire from Pablo Larrain focuses on a 250 year old vampire. It seems like a bit of fun.
* Love At First Sight (Netflix): This romance stars Ben Hardy and Haley Lu Richardson. It offers a bit of counter-programming.
Friday, September 22:
* Expend4bles (Theaters): That's right, a fourth installment of the action franchise featuring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, among others. This time they add Megan Fox to the mix. Expect some more high-octane adventure.
* Dumb Money (Theaters): From director Craig Gillispie, this follows the story of GameStop and the short squeeze that changes Wall Street forever. It boasts a great cast and looks like a fun and engaging story.
*No One Will Save You (Hulu): Kaitlyn Dever takes the lead as a quiet woman who encounters beings from another planet. That's right, it's late September so we're getting an alien thriller.
* Cassandro (Prime Video): Gael Garcia Bernal stars as a gay amateur wrestler who rises to stardom. This comes to Prime Video after a short theatrical run.
Friday, September 29:
* The Kill Room (Theaters): Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman star in an action film about a money laundering scheme gone wrong. Could be interesting.
* Saw X (Theaters): The franchise is back, and so is Tobin Bell as Jigsaw. This should be a boon for horror fans.
* The Creator (Theaters): Garreth Edwards, who directed Rogue One, is back with another sci-fi tale. It looks like an engaging futuristic world and stars John David Washington. I'm in on this one.
