2023 Broncos' Season, Week 1
Week 1: Las Vegas Raiders 17, Denver Broncos 16
Season Record: 0-1 (0-1 Home)
Key Play: In the Fourth Quarter with 6:34 remaining, Jimmy Garoppolo connected with Jakobi Myers on a short touchdown pass to give the Raiders a one-point lead. The Raiders held on for the win.
Recap: Same old Broncos. It was hard not to think that watching this game as the Broncos played poorly on Special Teams, gave up a go-ahead score late in the game and made crucial penalties and gaffs that kept them from winning. The Sean Payton era began much as the previous era left off, with a loss. The Broncos start 0-1, making the push to do better and reach the playoffs for the first time in eight years even tougher. Much worse, it was a loss at home to the Raiders and Josh McDaniels. We've lost three games to McDaniels since he took over and I'm tired of it. I'd like to see the Broncos turn it around, but it's hard to have confidence right now. There were some good moments, but this was a mediocre game and a mediocre effort, leading to a loss. And now the team may have suffered additional tough injuries to Greg Dulcich and Caden Sterns, continuing to take strengths and turn them into weaknesses. Let's hope they fare better next week.
Game Balls:
* Samaje Perine and Javonte Williams. The running game looked solid, and each back contributed four receptions.
* Courtland Sutton. Sutton had four catches for 32 yards and a touchdown, drawing a few crucial penalties, too.
* Russell Wilson. He looked better running Payton's offense, giving us fans hope.
Lingering Concerns:
* Will Lutz. The Broncos struggled kicking in the pre-season. Then the team traded for Will Lutz. He missed an extra point and a Field Goal in a game Denver lost by one point.
* Defense. In the pre-season, the Broncos surrendered the game late twice on defense. They did it again here. I'm officially concerned.
* Injuries. The Broncos have already had rotten injury luck. That seems to be continuing and it will test the depth of this squad.
