2023 Broncos' Season, Week 2
Week 2: Washington Commanders 35, Denver Broncos 33
Season Record: 0-2 (0-2 Home)
Key Play: With time expiring, and the Broncos trailing 35-27, Russell Wilson connected with Brandon Johnson on a Hail Mary. While attempting to get the two-point conversion to tie the game, the pass to Courtland Sutton came up short and the Broncos lost.
Recap: If you looked at the offensive stats, you'd think the Broncos had a huge game. The offense did look better. Russell Wilson had a couple turnovers but the first of them was a fumble caused by a face mask penalty that went unnoticed. Unfortunately, the rest of the game took a turn. The defense, which was so incredible in 2022, just couldn't get it done in Week 2. They allowed the Commanders to drive and score 35 points, which was enough for the win. The Broncos are 0-2, which is bad, having lost two winnable games, which is worse. The Broncos hit the road to face a tough Miami team next week which means that by the end of September the team could already be out of the running. It's not a great start to the season and we still have 16 weeks left to go.
Game Balls:
* Marvin Mims. Mims was great, catching two passes for 113 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 10 more. It was a great breakout game for the rookie.
* Brandon Johnson. Another young player who did well, catching two passes for 66 yards and two big touchdowns.
* Jonathan Cooper. Cooper had a big game, recording two sacks for the Broncos.
Lingering Concerns:
* Second Half Swoons. For the second game, the Broncos had a second half collapse leading to a loss.
* Defensive Woes. The Broncos' defense was the best part of the team in 2022, but so far this season it's been rough. Hopefully things can improve at some point.
