Upcoming Releases, January 2024
We've made it to a new year. This month, as is often the case to start the year, we get a mixture of films making wide releases and some new films. But there's always some gems! Let's dive in.
Thursday, January 4:
Society of the Snow (Netflix): This is an official entry in the Foreign Language competition. It tells the story of a Urugayan flight that crashed in the Andes, forcing survivors to battle cold and hunger for months before being rescued. It's a powerful tale.
Friday, January 5:
Night Swim (Theaters): The first new wide release of the year is a horror film. January is a big time for horror films and this has some intrigue.
Foe (Prime Video): The tale of a couple struggling, starring Paul Mescal and Saiorse Ronan. This one had a limited release in 2023 and now streams for a wide audience.
Friday, January 12:
Mean Girls (Theaters): We get a return to the world of Mean Girls, this time as a musical straight from Broadway. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are back and this looks like a lot of fun.
Soul (Theaters): This one was a streaming release due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now it gets a theatrical run, which should be fun.
The Beekeeper (Theaters): A fun new action film starring Jason Statham. This should be a strong way to begin the new year.
The Book of Clarence (Theaters): It's an epic set during Biblical times. I like the cast and I think there is plenty of promise in the premise. We'll see how it all comes together.
Self Reliance (Hulu): An original streaming film starring Jake Johnson. It's an interesting premise and should make for a fun watch.
Lift (Netflix): Delayed from 2023, this film centers on a female master thief. This one looks like an intriguing action film for Netflix.
Role Play (Prime Video): A married couple (Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo) have their lives turned upside down. It looks like a strong start to a new year for Prime Video.
Friday, January 19:
I.S.S. (Theaters): This futuristic action film is set on the International Space Station and features Chris Messina and Ariana DeBose. It looks like an engaging thriller.
The End We Start From (Theaters): Jodie Comer is a new mother who is battling a flood that covers London. I love a good weather-related disaster film.
Which Brings Me to You (Theaters): For the romantic set, this film features Lucy Hale in a love story. This offers a bit of counter-programming.
Origin (Theaters): Ava DuVernay's story of journalist writing a book in the midst of personal loss. It got a qualifying awards run late in 2023 and is a heck of a powerful story.
The Kitchen (Netflix): This dystopic tale comes from Daniel Kaluuya and looks like a bit of fun. This could be a big early film for Netflix.
Friday, January 26:
Miller's Girl (Theaters): This one features Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman, but it's a difficult story. It will be interesting to see if this one can find an audience.
The Underdoggs (Netflix): Snoop Dogg and George Lopez take the lead in this feel-good sports story. It's an interesting piece of casting that could pan out for them.
