2024 Broncos' Season, Free Agency

Free agency and a new league year has begun. With the Broncos moving on from Russell Wilson and eating $85 million in dead salary cap, including $53 million in 2024, it was always going to be a quiet off-season. In addition to Wilson, the team released Justin Simmons, traded Jerry Jeudy and saw Josey Jewell sign with the Panthers and Lloyd Cushenberry sign with the Titans.

It's not addition by subtraction, it's the first painful steps of a true re-build. No one wanted it, but the Broncos need to do it. While those have gone, the team has brought back some of its own players. P.J. Locke re-signed, giving some experience and stability at safety. The team also brought back receiver Lil' Jordan Humphrey, and re-worked the deal with Tim Patrick for him to stay. The team also re-signed Michael Burton at fullback. The team also brought back Adam Trautman at tight end.

In addition, Denver has pulled in a few free agents, so far focusing on the defense.

The biggest signing was safety Brandon Jones, who previously played with the Dolphins. With Jones, Locke and Caden Sterns, the Broncos have a strong core in the back end of the defense. It's a young, and affordable group that should help on defense.

The Broncos also focused on the front seven on defense. The team brought in former Saint Malcolm Roach to provide a big run-stopper in the middle at defensive tackle. While Jewell headed out, the team agreed to terms with linebacker Cody Barton on a one-year deal. These pieces keep the defense going, along with core players like Patrick Surtain, Alex Singleton and Zack Allen.

Don't expect the Broncos to be big players in the market with scant cap room available. Next off-season will be the Broncos' year. With the offensive skill positions in decent shape, expect the Broncos to continue to focus on offensive line, defensive depth and the quarterback position in free agency and the NFL Draft.
