Upcoming Releases, May 2024
We're into May, which means the start of the summer blockbuster movie season. Are you ready? I know I'm ready for some fun. Below is a look at what's coming this month!
Thursday, May 2:
The Idea of You (Prime Video): Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine take the lead in this romance film. It looks interesting and like something for a date night.
Friday, May 3:
Fall Guy (Theaters): Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling come together for the first big blockbuster of summer. This looks like it will be amusing and action-packed. In short, a great way to kick off Summer.
I Saw the TV Glow (Theaters): This film debut at the Sundance Film Festival to good reviews. It's a horror film with an interesting hook and a strong cast. It should find an audience.
Unfrosted: The Story of Pop Tarts (Netflix): This comes from Jerry Seinfeld, who stars and directs. It looks like it has the potential to be really fun and really funny.
Thursday, May 9:
Mother of the Bride (Netflix): Miranda Cosgrove and Brooke Shields take the lead in this romantic comedy that's ideally timed to head into Mother's Day Weekend.
Friday, May 10:
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Theaters): This continuation of the modern franchise is rumored to be the longest installment. It also drives the story forward into the future. It should be a welcome sight for fans of the franchise.
Tarot (Theaters): A staple of the theaters is the low-budget horror film. This slides right in, featuring a group of teens who dive in too far in entering the world of Tarot cards. I'm not impressed.
We Grown Now (Theaters): This independent film looks at public housing in Chicago in the early 1990s. It was in the Independent Spirit Award competition last year and now gets a wider release.
Friday, May 17:
IF (Theaters): John Krasinski brings us this family-friendly tale of imaginary friends. This has a great cast, led by Ryan Reynolds, and looks like a lot of fun.
Back to Black (Theaters): We've seen plenty of music biopics in recent years. This one tells the story of Amy Winehouse, and looks to be an engaging and emotional ride.
The Strangers, Chapter 1 (Theaters): This takes us back to the origin of this trio of killers. Summer is a time for horror films, so this makes three straight weeks of new horror options in May.
Thelma the Unicorn (Netflix): This comes from Jared and Jarusha Hess and looks like a bit of family fun come to stream.
Thursday, May 23:
The Blue Angels (Prime Video): This is a new documentary about the famous group of pilots and planes. It features Glen Powell and looks like an interesting piece of counter-programming.
Friday, May 24:
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Theaters): The latest from the world of Mad Max focuses on Furiosa, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the role. It also features Chris Hemsworth and should be a bit of dystopic adventure.
Garfield (Theaters): Here we get our first big animated films in theaters for the summer. This is a new version of Garfield featuring the voice talents of Chris Pratt. It looks like some fun, family entertainment.
Atlas (Netflix): This is a futuristic tale about a woman fighting to save the universe. It features Jennifer Lopez and figures to add a big-budget, big-name feature to the Netflix summer lineup.
Friday, May 31:
Robot Dreams (Theaters): This was an Academy Award nominee that's now getting a wide release. It's an ambitious feature that will likely appeal more to adults despite being animated. It's a dialogue free story of friendship.
Ezra (Theaters): This is the story of a successful late-night comedian whose career hits the skids and has to move in with his father. It's got a good cast, including Robert De Niro, which should make it a bit of late month fun.
