Upcoming Releases: June, 2024

We're now squarely into summer, with blockbusters and other special releases making their way to theaters and streaming. Let's take a look at what awaits us during the first full month of summer.

Thursday, June 6:
Am I OK? (Max):
This film made a splash at Sundance in 2023 and waited a while to get a wide release. It's a comedy starring Dakota Johnson that's sure to be engaging for fans. It streams on Max!

Friday, June 7:
Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Theaters)
: This is the fourth installment in the franchise that started in 1995. It's sort of a return to theaters for Will Smith, too, who has been largely absent since his Oscars incident. I love him and Martin Lawrence in these movies, so I'm excited to see what we get here.

The Watchers (Theaters): This one is produced by M. Night Shymalan, based on a script from his daughter, Ishana, who also directs this film. It is an intriguing concept with a solid cast, led by Dakota Fanning, and a good trailer. It's a bit of counter-programming on the first Friday in June.

Hit Man (Netflix): This is another film that made the rounds at festivals in 2023 and now gets a wide release. It comes from director Richard Linklater and has been praised for the lead performance from Glen Powell. I'm excited to see it.

Thursday, June 13:
Brats (Hulu)
: This documentary comes from director Andrew McCarthy. It takes a look at the Brat Pack. It looks like an interesting stream for documentary fans.

Friday, June 14:
Inside Out 2 (Theaters):
This sequel to the Pixar classic introduces a set of new emotions. It looks like a wild and beautiful journey and could be one of the biggest animated releases of the year.

Thursday, June 20:
Federer: Twelve Final Days (Prime Video):
This is another documentary, this time a sports feature on Tennis great Roger Federer over the final 12 days of his career. A great stream for sports fans.

Friday, June 21:
The Bikeriders (Theaters)
: This one stars Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, and was originally set for an Oscar run in late 2023. It got bumped to this summer slot where it can dominate the awards talk for a few months. I'm intrigued by this one.

Thelma (Theaters): This indie comedy made a splash at Sundance in 2024 and features a great turn from June Squibb. I'm excited to see this one, which looks like a fun film.

Kinds of Kindness (Theaters): Yorgos Lanthimos is back, paired again with Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe, among others. There's not much known about the plot, but the film was well received at Cannes in May. It should be a quirky adventure.

Trigger Warning (Netflix): It's summer, so it tracks we'd get a blockbuster action film on Netflix as well. This one stars Jessica Alba and looks like it will feature plenty of action sequences for the streaming crowd.

Tuesday, June 25:
I Am Celine Dion (Prime Video)
: Another documentary feature, this one on the iconic singer. For fans of Dion and her music, this will be a fun deep dive on stream.

Friday, June 28:
A Quiet Place: Day One (Theaters):
This is the third feature in the franchise, but the first without Emily Blunt. This one takes things back to when the creatures first attacked and sets the action in the heart of New York City. It looks like a big, blockbuster take.

Horizon: An American Saga, Part 1 (Theaters): This is part of a series of westerns from Kevin Costner. It's his baby, and part one debuted at Cannes in May. It drops here, with the second part coming quickly in August. I'm excited to see it.

Fancy Dance (Apple TV+): This film stars Lily Gladstone and was acquired by Apple TV+. It gets a limited theatrical release the week prior, then lands on the streamer to end June. I'm excited to see what Gladstone does here.

A Family Affair (Netflix): This is a romantic comedy led by Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey King. It's a bit of counter-programming to the more action-heavy offerings in theaters and should be appealing to genre fans. I'm curious based on the impressive cast alone.
