Upcoming Releases, July 2024

We're into July, the heart of summer. We're getting a couple of the most hotly anticipated blockbusters of the year this month, as well as a couple edgy horror offerings. Let's dive in.

Wednesday, July 3:
* Despicable Me 4 (Theaters):
The fourth adventure in this animated franchise finds Gru (Steve Carell) on another adventure. With him are the Minions, who this time get some special powers. This looks fine, another solid entry in a decent animated franchise.

*Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. (Netflix): It's been 40 years since the first Beverly Hills Cop film, and 30 years since the last installment in the franchise. That's a long layoff. I've always enjoyed Eddie Murphy in this role and these films, so I'm curious to see it back in action.

Thursday, July 4:
* Space Cadet (Prime Video):
For the Fourth of July, we get this comedy about Emma Roberts as a Florida party girl who ends up in the Space Program. This should be a lot of fun.

Friday, July 5:
* MaXXXine (Theaters):
This is the third in a franchise from T.I. West, following X and Pearl. It returns Mia Goth to the lead and moves the action to the 1980s, where she's an adult film star trying to get her big break. Expect a lot of savage violence.

Thursday, July 11:
* Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black (Prime Video):
The latest from Tyler Perry is about a young bank teller whose marriage falls apart. This should be on par with most of his other recent productions.

Friday, July 12:
* Longlegs (Theaters):
What precisely this horror film is about remains somewhat mysterious. But it has some edgy trailers and a good cast led by Maika Monroe and Nicholas Cage. This could be some good, creepy fun.

* Fly Me to the Moon (Theaters): This fun comedy is about an ad man and a NASA controller in the run up to the moon mission. Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. I'm ready for a good time here.

Thursday, July 18:
* My Spy The Eternal City (Prime Video):
This is a sequel to the comedy from 2020 starring Dave Bautista. I enjoyed the original, which was a bit of fun, so I figure this will be a solid streaming watch.

Friday, July 19:
* Twisters (Theater):
The sequel to the 1996 film. This one stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones. The original is one of my favorite films of all time, so this is one of my most anticipated films of 2024.

* Skywalkers: A Love Story (Netflix): This documentary follows a daredevil couple who attempt to summit a skyscraper. It looks both thrilling and like a wild ride. I'm excited to see where it goes.

Friday, July 26:
* Deadpool & Wolverine (Theaters):
This is the only Marvel film being released this year. It looks to be an action-packed romp that could be a highlight of summer. I'm excited to check it out.

* Didi (Theaters): Set in 2008, this is a coming-of-age story about a young boy on the cusp of high school. It did well at Sundance earlier this year and now gets to a wide audience. I'm excited to see it.
